No surprises here, but what on earth is going on with Army? Doc, Cazz, anyone?

Lucas, Armfield, Hampson & Garlett are the surprises IMO, along with naming Judd for what should be a dress rehearsal for the next 3 rounds.

Judd may still sit out, and if he does it opens up the line-up to look something like this:

FB: Joseph Jamison Thornton
HB: Browne Bower Russell
CC: Scotland Gibbs Simpson
HF: Carrazzo Henderson Houlihan
FF: Walker Waite Betts

RR: Kreuzer McLean Murphy

INT: Warnock O'hAilpin Grigg Yarran Hadley Davies

I've put Davies at the expense of Robinson because I feel we're light-on for pure defensive options in this team. If Armfield was available for selection, one of Browne or Grigg would be out and Robinson would get the nod. As it stands, Grigg & Browne are auditioning for the same spot in the round 1 side IMO, while there are also the following duels on show:

O'hAilpin vs. Henderson - both could get a selection nod but they are definitely battling for CHF longer term. Had Setanta not missed the Swans game and played against West Coast the choice would have been made obvious.

McLean vs. Hadley - Again, both could get a selection nod, but if it boils down to one... I have absolutely no idea who to pick. Hadley has been in excellent form, while McLean is clearly warming up to be a clearance machine. MC seem to favour McLean.

Struggling to understand why Lucas has been left out of this team. Hasn't set the world on fire but offers run and carry with some solid disposal. Grigg offers clearance play with little else these days and wouldn't even be in the mix if Hadley was a yard quicker.

No Armfield, Judd and the lack of form of Grigg is really hurting our team going into round 1. We're either going to lose out in defence, in midfield rotations or in speed on ball. Won't hurt us too much against Richmond but we've got some tough games coming up.

The hard part is picking 7 players out of that squad that wont play round 1 - Not finding room for Armfield Hammer and Lucas

I'm led to believe a hammy (recurrence of last years hammy) strain that won't go away. Army has a history of small hamstring tears, so playing safe at this stage of the season would seem a wise move. Possibly the fittest prior to the Christmas break, he may have to get some match fitness by coming back through the Bullants...was a certain starter for Round 1...now opens the door up for Browney to get his form on song.

Shouldn't, or won't? If the former:

Wiggins, Anderson, Judd, Jacobs, Davies and Grigg come to mind, but you're right: the 7th one is a toss-up.

If Armfield was fit, Lucas wouldn't need to be in the selection mix for round 1 as Browne would move more into the midfield rotation. Hampson is slightly behind Warnock because for all his pace and so on, he only imposes himself in ruck contests at present. I'm just surprised he wasn't named in a squad of 29 when Jacobs was.

So when we're talking about round 1, it always comes back to Armfield. ;)

Judd has to play. Yes it's a dress rehearsal but it's important that the captain has as ideal a preparation as possible.
He'll need the match practice.

Then he should play in the practice matches for the Bullants while the rest of the team learns to survive without him, as they'll have to do for 3 weeks. The last VFL practice match is on the 3rd of April, so he'll have a hitout every week save for the third week of his suspension. There should be no issue of match fitness.

Nothing to be gained by playing Judd in a Bullants practice match. I think he'll play against Adelaide and spend about half the game on the bench.

Daniel Talia is playing for the Crows. I will be interested to see how he goes about it. It's a shame Lucas isn't playing so he can show him up ;)

Brownes in cos he's found the ball consistently the last couple of games....I don't share the obsession some have with his disposal issues. I reckon he's a real goer and I wish him and his disposal all the best.

Read through some of the previous posts and you'll find out what's wrong with Armfield .

Browne's in because he's a chance of playing round 1 .

Quite simple really .

To those with a better recollection of the Crows squad than myself - how close are they to full strength for this game?

Molly they have a very long injury list if I recall correctly.
