Eddie was outstanding.
Juddy was , well, Juddy.
Hendo can seriously play.
McLean (despite other reports) was so hard at it .
Setanta was Earl like in the 1st half.
Stephen Browne's disposal is woeful.
Brisbane got 3 goals from charities.
Fev played on the best full back in the comp.

It was great to have a win and we were much better than last week, but we were not overly convincing especially our disposal and entry into the fwd line. Brisbane had a ton of quality players out.

Just got back from Visy, so good watching the blues play there again, here my thoughts,

Betts - easily our best, very lively and looked dangerous when near the ball
Walker - great game, looked a cut above and disposal was mainly good although he still chose a couple of poor options
Hendo - getting some more confidence, looked dangerous at times and just kept presenting, looks like he will be a good player but we need to be patient.
Kruze - much much better in ruck than fwd, ruck work and second efforts were great
Carlos - still looks lost, need to keep giving him an opportunity but Im not sure he is the answer
Judd - great as usual
Gibbs - good first half, looked awesome early and then faded or rested
Yarran - flashed in and out as usual, not convincing yet, but must must persist
Carrots - strong game, much better than last week, disposal stll concerning
Scotland - strong game, hard at it, consistent
Warnock - OK, not much around the ground, will get better
Jamo - strong and straightens us right up
T-Bird - typical game mostly good, with a couple of poor errors
Russell - typical frustrating game, wins the ball, looks awesome running of half back and nails his kick straight to an opponent...should never ever take the kick ins....ever....ever
Mclean - better than last week, but not great, just looks so slow, dont think he likes the firm track
Bower - incredible defending and is becoming one of the best rebounding defenders in the compettion
Browne - typical game, tried hard, has a crack but in my opinion he is just not up to AFL standard as he doesnt have any special trick, not great at anything
AJ- solid, hard at it, without getting a lot of it
Robbo - great first half and just has a crack at everything, skills good, but like last years, goes hard early and ran out of puff
Simmo - talk time getting back into, took two screamers, finished strongly, look very skinny this year
Houla - quiet, needed the run I reckon

If Ive missed any one let me know...

Thanks Jaydee. I'll have a JD after that report. :thumbsup: maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate

Simmo is skinny, but he has put on some more beef in 2010? I saw him in Jan, he looked bigger.
McLean....."not great, just looks so slow, dont think he likes the firm track". Geez he better get use to the Dome surface quickly. Slow coach....jesus...he's a depth player. Maybe Browne is a head of him. :roll:
Please tell me Russell is better than you report. What happened with the kick outs?

Keen to hear more on Warnock, Setanta and what about Hammer?

HENDO watch this guy grow in the Dark Navy Blue. That's 2 weeks in a row he's performed well at CHF. :thumbsup: >>>>>Fev :grin:

Some good signs today and I agree with much of club29.
Still disposal issues or maybe moreso decision issues leading to a need to have perfect disposal which the offending parties lacked.

I love the talls in our back line. Jammo, third and bower really did a fantastic job. Surely if jammo can have an injury free year he will be known as one of the premier fullbacks in the comp and bower one of the most attacking tall hbf's. Jammo towelled fev and t bird beat brown and outmuscled him a few times too.
I'm not set on our back 3 smalls but a special mention to j Anderson today who showed plenty. I was very impressed.

Players:
judd: a couple of disposal errors when he pokes at the ball but otherwise just like normal. Lot more run and carry today than last year. Forward line he got free with ease and was regularly 3m in front of opponent
Brock: he is a truck and his tackles stick. Quite a few really bad passes at the worst time and at times he does look like he is running in mud, but much better this week.

Walker: noone frustrated me as much. He flys, he gets so much of it and can kick beautifully. But continually kick clangers and runs teammates into trouble with ridiculous handball. He can kick I am sure of this just his desicion making choices means he must be perfect and often is not. I love him in the backlinelocking down a player a d running off them, but at same time ibate it when he is steaming out of defence as unless it is absolutely obvious who to kick to he regularly makes a poor choice in my opinion.

Setanta: showed quite a bit. Some great marks, played on instead of holding up play, sheperded for players. Still floats in and out but I reckon he def gets ff round 1.

Henderson: did well, didn't impose himself or anything but did lots of good things and provides good pressure. Anyone who has been worried he is too slow, that is wrong, his pace is v good actually for a big man.

Warnock: improving each week. I was impresses today with his around ground skills

Russel: lock him in for hbf, but he did make some really bad skill and decision errors when going backwards or sideways to slow the play. Loved his dash and pressure today.

Hadley: I thought was excellent a d stillhave t decided if I have him or brock as my starting centre.

Betts: wow, pretty much was bog, makes us a way better team and everything he did looked a million bucks.

Simmo: great dash and comittment we know and love. Good options too.

Gibbs: 2nd gear all day

Robinson: going 100% and looks great at times.

Yarran: not in my starting line up at the moment. Did some nice things

kruez: great in ruck, around ground, tackles etc. Went forward but didn't get to show much

red head from brissy was really really exciting. Don't know who he was, but will be checking him out. Speed, poise, disposal and guts.

Overall: was happy with our plan: obvious we will be taking teams on this year and running in packs through corridor when possible. We still just don't have the disposal, and the forward line options. Think some one said it last week, when running out of backline we need a reiwoldt flying down the wing to be the link man. To often our players are making half hearted leads and cuts, asking player with ball to kick it on top of their head with a player on them. We need to clear to clear the space and then lead hard into it, the. Get out of there as soon as yourlead isn't honoured so someone else can enter..

Just got home from the game.

Firstly the carpark situation at the ground could have been improved... We were trapped in there for a good 30 minutes without moving as traffic slowly filtered out onto Royal Parade. Eventually we were saved by a quick thinking motorist who removed one of the steel beams that goes between the wooden posts on the cemetery side of the park so we could drive out around the back.

What made this bearable was the victory, albeit a practice match victory, with some good signs from some maligned players.

Was there a lot to like? No, probably not. But, there was a lot more to like than last week.

Henderson's efforts in the last 40-odd minutes of the game left me floating on air, he was terrific, booting two and setting up 2 or 3 others, as well as unselfishly opting not to snap at goal after receiving a handball from Eddie, who he gave the ball back to, who was then tackled.

He lead up and presented well, contested all afternoon and performed his defensive duties without fault. Fantastic efforts from the young man, and his two goals were a great personal reward for sustained efforts all day.

When he punted the sealer through from outside 50 Dad and I smiled wryly at each other before my old man added, somewhat tongue in cheek of course, "the King is dead. Long live the King".

I also thought Mclean was a lot better today. He was a little sloppy at times by foot, but his hardness and aggression in the contest was a highlight. Quite a few times he was unlucky to be a victim of the ever contentious prior opportunity ruling which penalises the only player willing to retrieve the ball. All in all I thought his efforts today were great, he gave us plenty of grunt in close and was instrumental in winning quite a few clearances.

Lastly (I have to go pick up my pizza) our defence is slowly bonding together. Their work in shutting down and spoiling both Brown and Fevola was fantastic. The addition of Jamison back into the team does wonders for our structure and the growth and maturity in Bower continues unabated. He is such an exciting prospect... But, we all know this, don't we? Thornton, Bower and Jamison all combined terrifically to rotate on and off the two big opposition forwards with Bower usually following them if they left the 50 and Jamison being left to do the wrestling work. That would, however, be a disservice to the two who also put in several excellent spoils.

Unfortunately we missed the first quarter as traffic was a bit heavier than expected, glad to read that both Yarran and Betts started the match well... I remember thinking something must have been working well if we were 3.6.24 by the time we arrived.

All in all it was an encouraging display today.

Keep the faith fellow Blueboys!

Only saw the first half and a bit of the third quarter after my 16 month old daughter cracked it and wanted out.

Some observations:

Bower has become an excellent defender and continues to get stronger for one on ones.
Ditto Jamison. Very impressive.
I though Brock was pretty good. Some sloppy disposal, but he was no Robinson Crusoe there and he got plenty of it.
Browne's efforts were great, but his disposal awful. It was pretty reliable I thought when he started, so maybe its a confidence thing. He gets the footy.
Henderson presented very well and had good hands.
Warnock's got good hands off the ground and a reasonable left hoof.
Setanta was very good - presented well, looked leaner. I thought he had no great future, but he could be handy this year. Presented very well up forward.
Robbo was good from what I saw.
Eddie was fast and creative. Great second efforts.

Gameplan wise I can see what Ratts is aiming at. The ball was flicked around ad nauseum and it was in almost perpetual motion when we were attacking. Occasionally a backwards kick would happen and then it was tempo footy, until opportunity presented to attack again. Still not convinced about our ability to do this, but full marks to the efforts to bring structure to the gameplan. Strong elements of the Geelong set up, with lots of Crow throws and flick passes in close, looking to set up someone to run and create. The big problem is that the skill level has to be very good (it wasn't) and all the players have to be on the same page for it to work - that will take time. We still turnover the footy far too much when kicking to stationary targets.

No Hampson, Jacobs, Lucas, Davies and Garlett from Last week.

Betts easily best on ground
Bower set up many plays from the backline
Jamieson fantastic
Thornton reliable as usual
Russell plenty of dash
Anderson, love his attack on the ball and dash however does turn it over
Browne - I like Browne but I must say I'm really concerned about his disposal, many clangers today
Scotland very good
McLean much better today, hard at it but very slow (ala bentick)
Hadley better option than McLean at this point of time
Judd was Judd and in fact found more free space than normal
Warnock - very good, nimble like a small, in other words he doesn't play awkward for such a big man. Some very good tap work today
Henderson keeps presenting, just turned 20 and hopefully he will fill out a bit by the time he is 22yrs old, good game
Yarran started very well and laid many hard tackles
Joseph - typical game
Carrazo plenty of the ball and didn't notice as many turn overs this week
Walker - plenty of run and carry will improve
Houlihan - ok/solid didn't really stand out
Simpson - for such a light weight is dash and hardness is fantastic - should be skipper round 1
Stetanta - Different/unorthidox but very effective, good on the ground, laid a ripper tackle that made his opponent get up very slowly

Overall my best were: Betts, Warnock, Bower, Jamieson, Thornton, Walker, Judd and Simpson

And yes number 18 for the Lions did look good - Todd Banfield may be a good get for super coach but remember they had no Black, Power and Rich - may struggle to get a game.

Black, Power and Rich all out... you'd expect us to win enough midfield ball to beat them, to be honest. We had our first-choice midfield save for Murph.

Great to see/hear that the defense continues to gel, and young Hendo is showing signs.

Sounds like McGuire played an OK second half. So he's not quite the shuffling old man some would think?

On Brock... would you expect that in the season proper, as footy gets a lot more contested, he'd be greater value than he currently seems to be in matches where the pressure isn't so hot? That's what I suspect anyway.

Agreed.
It was all good natured.

It was like watching your old girlfriend going out with another bloke. You hate it but you still love her but you know you'll eventually get over it..........unless of course she comes back to you when she's 33 and plays in a premiership. (Damn, I'm still not over it!)

heapz of positives out of today
apart from the obvious (juddy) there were alot of standouts i thought
some may disagree but i thought walker was really good today, broke the lines and at times i actually thought it was judd and his disposal seems to have improved alot
eddie was awsome and looks the fittest hes ever been
our backline looks so strong with bower, jamo and thorton in there and fit
hendo yaz and warnock look to be getting more comfortable and all played well
and despite wat ppl say i think, setant presented really well and worked hard all day
not to mention murphy and waite are to cum back... things are looking not bad without getting to ahead of myself

Thanks for the reports so far, keep 'em coming.

Rapted about the reviews of our defence. From an area that was tagged as a problem for us, to hearing reports that the guys are starting to gel cohesively is a massive lift. Here's hoping Jamo can stay fit and healthy.

:thumbsup:

My observations from watching today's game-

* I've seen nothing in the last few weeks that causes me to deviate from the view that we will struggle early in the season without Judd and a match-fit Murphy & Waite as we commence LAF (Life After Fev);
* Our kick-ins have been an issue for years. I've seen no evidence in the last few weeks that we are about to turn the corner in this regard;
* We look like we've spent a lot of the pre-season on fitness work, but very little on skills work :mad: Our skill level looks alarmingly bad at the moment. Let's hope it's "rust" or "cob-webs"... :? ;
* Gibbs looks like he's playing a different game sometimes. He is by far our most skilful player IMO;
* Eddie - played very well today, great to see him back;
* Simmo - see Eddie;
* Warnock - did a very good job until he ran out of puff towards the end of the 3rd quarter;
* Carlos - see Warnock;
* Judd - I can't explain how much I love this bloke;
* Kreuzer - how many others also think he's struggling a bit at the moment?;
* Walker - I'm not as up-beat as some others about his game. I thought he was OK, but we need him to run into some form before Rd 1;
* Brock - was better today, but is there a slower midfielder in the AFL?! Tough as nails and did the grunt work today we recruited him for, but mobility and skills are problematic;
* Hadley - in better form than Brock;
* Yarran & Hendo - drifted in and out, but good to see them both contribute and get on the scoreboard;
* Browne - struggled today;
* Robbo - loved his game today;
* every game that Jamo, T-Bird, Bower & JR play together in defence is money in the bank - they are showing signs of forming a solid group back there;
* our tackling was generally good.

Just home from Visy Park.

Firstly I have to say it was fantastic sitting watching the footy from the Gardiner Stand again.....the good old times!

The boys were inaccurate in the 1st qtr. I think we were 3.6 at qtr time. We kicked 11.3 after that so was good to see the kicking straighten up.

Setanta looked good for the first qtr and a half but was almost unsighted in the 2nd half.
Judd was typical Judd.
Gibbs, Simmo and Walks al looked good.
The backline gelled really well together. If Thornton, Jammo and Bower continue on their way and Waite slots back in then I reckon our back 6 will be the best it has been in a long long time. Bower is going to be a beauty!!
McLean was better and did some hard stuff in an under. But disposal let him down a fair but so needs to improve there.
Krueze looks so much better in the ruck. Rest him up forward but dont play him there permanently.
Warnocks performance was encoraging also. Got thru a full game unscathed which was great.
Betts was BOG easily. His presence up forward is huge for such a small guy. He could
become the first player under 6 foot to play FF and kick 60-70 goals I reckon. Blues may decide to adopt a Bulldogs style forward line with our smalls and really Eddie would not be out of place at FF.
Yarran was good in parts also.
Hendo will be a very good player. Still needs a bit more confidence and bulk but he is finding his feet at Carlton and he will be a ripper. Very team orientated and knows how to play up forward. Not quite ready to take on the no.1 opposition defender but if he gets the opportunity to play as our 2nd or even 3rd tall up forward I think he will be dangerous. Remembering his pre-season was slightly interrupted so he is still getting to 100% full fitness.
All in all it was a better outing than last week. We had Murphy, Waite, Hampson, Jacobs, Garlett and a couple of the young kids out but Lions were also without Black, Power, Rich and Drummond.
Charman looked like he did his right knee (not sure how bad but he didnt look good afterwards) and Mitch Clark looked like he was limping on the sidelines also. A few of the Lions boys seemed to have added a few 'stickers' to the arms over summer. For those that are interested, Matt Maguire had a pretty good game for the Lions also....
At the end of the game all the boys went up to Fev which I thought was a nice gesture. Still damn hard seeing Fev in a no. 5 Brisbane jumper!
GO BLUES
