I have been following the Bluebaggers since the mid sixties. Seen them in the highs and lows. Seen them win EIGHT premierships. The 43 point come from behind 1970, the 28 goal 1972, both of which we were never expected to win as well as the 1995 with the team that Parkin said coached itself. We should have won four in a row if not for politics and Percy Jones coaching in 1980.

But memories are everything. I took my then eleven year old to the prelim final that absolutely everyone had written off. Remember when the scum got 17 points up in the final quarter? We all thought that's it, they were brave but as Parkin had described them, they were a B grade team and they were finished.

The team had other ideas. Who could forget Kouta, Lance and Hamill (sob).

The scum had ten or was it eleven? more scoring shots (some were out on the full) and we won by a point! Let me tell you all, it was better than any premiership I had ever been to. Maybe because it was against the scum. Maybe because we were such underdogs, they had all the momentum at the start of the last quarter, they were the premiership favourites, they had so many extra scoring shots. You add it all up and it was just unbelievable.

Sure we lost the following week against North but I as other blues supporters do still love to torture scum mates with 1999 revisited.

I have just read this post and realise that I sound like a filth supporter. Oh my god. Bring on flag number 17 quick.

Post-script (FWIW) - The 99 Preliminary Final ranks 6th of all the game reviews on the Blueseum, coming after the 1995, 1987, 1970, 1979 and 1982 Grand Finals. At the end of the day, I think more attention is given to the GF's, but perhaps for ammunition with Essendon* fans nothing hurts more than a missed Premiership...

Especially a premiership that they were "dead certainties" ( ) to win

its up to each individual if they want to move on from 99 as everyone has their own circumstances of that day.

Personally, at that time i worked with 5 Essendon* supporters and I was the only Carlton fan. The week leading up to the Prelim, they
were all so cocky and were saying that this was just an easy win before winning the 99 flag as it was in the bag.

i took it all in and said nothing (at the time i too thought were going to get thrashed)

Come Monday, bright and early for work and I let my mouth rip and i did not let let up. One of the guys didnt even turn up as he
went to the game. he copped it twice as much on Tuesday.

Today, I still use the 99 prelim. when the Scum all start up on me about, "Whose going to kick your goals now without Fev?". or they go on about he Blues Booze cruize. i just revert back to the 99prelim and how we stop them from winning another flag.

And they just shut up !!!!!!

So i say, if using the 99 prelim shuts the scum up, then keep using it !!!!!!

It was a fantastic game for the neutral or CFC supporters.
A classic which should be remembered.

For me, there's more to it than that....rivalry.
That game stil hurts Bumbers supporters, and when they hang shit on anything Carlton we have that chestnut to pull out and wave in their face. It's a winner.

It's all about banter, passion and why all games are significant, not just on the day, but forever.
That's why we value every premiership won...we always refer to the 16 cups.
That's why we value the win loss ratio against other teams.

History counts, and when you have a rich history like Carlton why would you want to shy away from any of it.

Bring it on. It's alive. It's real. It happened. It rekindles excitement for many.

Some of the times I've used it as ammunition, I've got back "Oh, what, by 1 point, so what!?"

Watched the last half (again) last night.

I'd forgotten just what a sniping filthy bastard Dean Wallis was. sly punches to the head in marking contests... rolling his hips over opponent's heads while they're lying on the ground... jeez it was such poetic justice when he tried to do something that required skill, and lost the game for them courtesy of Dog Brown's tackle of the century.

Should we move on? Well, I'll always remember it fondly, just like I fondly remember all our big wins. But the sad truth is, it's the biggest win we've had since the 1995 Grand Final. So until we win No.17, I guess I won't really 'move on' from it.

Just watched the last half on Fox. How good was Kouta?
