Didn't want to sidetrack the official membership count thread, but while listening to the radio this morning I was shocked to hear that Hawthorn and Collingwood are already over the 40,000 membership mark. That's almost double ours!

How can that be?

We have a huge supporter base so how can they be so far ahead of us? What are they doing differently?

Well for one the Hawks include pet memberships...so if you were a Hawk fan and you owned a goldfish, you could sign it up as a member. Collingwood have included those three game memberships in their count, which only cost 70 odd dollars and would appeal to quite a few people who don't go to the footy every week, but would still like to go a handful of times and be counted as a member.

Don't forget the Hawks also promote big time in Tassie. That instantly adds another 10,000 members to their count. This also plays a big role in their numbers.

Both the Dawkers and the Pies have direct debit memberships which just roll on year to year unless cancelled, so basically all their regular members are counted as paid up from day one.

Why don't Carlton do that? It sounds like a good idea.

You really reckon Tassie is worth 10K members, even with the pets?

Maybe in Tassie they count both heads as separate memberships.

Amazes me that people still think the two headed thing is funny. :screwy:

Maybe I'm a little behind the times. What's the current joke about Tasmanians these days then?

Well it would be quite a few extra thousand members. They have been playing matches down there for a number of years now and people would have definitely jumped on board and treated Hawthorn as their own considering they don't house an AFL team.

AFAIK Pies have introduced a "mini" membership this year (think its 5 games) in order to be able to beat Hawthorns numbers. Regarding Hawthorn - just check their home game attendance numbers of last year and you know there membership accounting is doggy.....

Hawthorn had the most members of the Victoria clubs last year (50k), but were about 6th on the revenue ladder. They give away a lot of free memberships.

I heard a story of a guy that had been a member for 4 years who didn't renew as he couldn't be bothered. The club called him and gave him a free 5 game membership.

It's a propaganda exercise. The real figure published should be membership revenue.

I think Hawthorns Tasmanian membership was something like ~7000 last year, but heres a lot of pet sheep down here that could be counted. That might just be one farmer..

On our travels around Tassie a few weeks ago I noted that you can buy several postcards revolving around the whole two headed thing
