Walker and Houlihan are a dead set disgrace. What the hell kind of professional thinks they can show up in *that* shape?!

They better pull their fingers out if they wish to feature down at Cramer Street this year.

(I'm kidding, obviously. They're in absurdly good condition... It's actually frightening how fit they all look)

Carlton 2012: Lets remind them why they once feared the Dark.

Having boxed for 13 years its amazing that this is the first story I have ever read of footballers using the pugilistic arts as training.

Let me tell you something for those who have never entered the ring for a 3 minute round ... its is flowering exhausting.

For those who have never hit a heavy bag for three minutes ... Its flowering exhausting.

Afl footballers are probably some of the fittest athletes on earth but imagine what sort of tank you need to complete 12 rounds of boxing ... ever heard of ALF footballers throwing up at training? I must have thrown up a million times during boxing training ... you have the right kind of trainer and they are flowering sadists.

Also look at the boys bodies now ... superb ... boxing gives you great shape, cannon ball shoulders (look at Hoops!) and awesome lats, legs etc ... they will all have much more overhead strength this year.

What made me laugh is they were really grateful for the experience and happy with thier gains but they were so glad it was over.

I have been a bit of a critic of Ratts but the fact that this was his own doing gives him a big tick in my book.

I am really hoping that if the boys have a good year this year that some sort of boxing regime will be incorporated into the following preseason.

Boxing really seperates the men from the boys.

Just wrapped it was Carlton who may have unlocked the secret first!

Go Blues!

The hardest sport in the world is boxing

..boys have been doing water polo as well remember....we have gone from being the biggest tanks to having the biggest tanks in a relatively short period of time...worth noting that all our 'indiscretions' happened in 2009, not 2010...bring it on! :fight: :fight:

Just on the fittest sports people, I have heard Mens/womens field Hockey is right up there for aerobic capacity requirements. Running bent over alot of the time with the stick must sap the air out of you. It's all non stop and quick from end to end.

I read an article a few years ago where they deemed that cross-country skiiing was the toughest sport to compete in.

Absolutely agree London Blue!

The other thing I would say is... congratulations to the players for taking their punishment on the chin and working to better themselves. I think it is credit to them.

And well done to the club for sending them there too.

I'm waiting for the negative nellies to pipe up over something... but from my perspective it is well done to all concerned.

If that was deliberate, it was funny. If it was an accident, it still was...

XC Skiiers tend to have the highest max VO2 capacities of all endurance athletes, so yeah, it's the sport that requires the most advanced cardio-vascular system. Because it's not weight-bearing, there's practically no limit to the amount of training you can do... and because it uses both lower and upper body, (unlike cycling and running) it taxes the CV system like nothing else. Rowing comes close, but has more of a bias towards strength and slightly less towards CV fitness.

Field hockey players are the fittest (running wise) of all the team sports. The running they do in-game and training pretty closely mimics the sort of repetition work that middle and long distance runners do. I know a few hockey players who can smash out a quality 5k/10k time with no specific training for that event.

But I still think boxing is the hardest of all. Total-body fitness, explosive speed AND endurance, plus the fact you get punched in the face and the stomach a lot. Huge admiration for those guys.

I grew up playing Field Hockey and absolutely LOVE the sport.

People for some reason think of it as a "soft" sport but I can tell you when you are running at full speed and you get bumped off the ball and tumble onto astro turf (which is basically like sand paper) you end up with giant gashers all over your body similar to being hit by a car and skidding across the road (I know, I have done both). Oh and the number of broken fingers or colar bones I have seen from people being hit by a hockey stick or a rock hard ball flying through the air would shock some people.

As for endurance capabilities of Hockey players, I was never an overly athletic kid (always been on the chubby side) but I remember yr 10 PE doing a beep test and finishing 3rd behind 2 kids who were doing training with TAC footy sides. Everyone was shocked with how well I could run. Hockey is basically a game where you are constantly at running, either carrying the ball, getting into position or defending against the other side. It isn't like Soccer where people will be walking up and down the field as the speed the ball travels at it huge (if you can hit it properly) and it is generally played in a more attacking manner.

I grew up watching 'the Running Man'.

It's a dead set classic. Arnie at the very top of his game.
