Bronze Statues

Just read that Taylor Harris has been immortalised through a bronze statue.

Playing devils advocate, what has she done to earn a bronze statue? Legend of AFL? 1000 goals? 3 time Brownlow winner?

It was a moment in a game, that created social commentary, not based on achievements that others have received a bronze statue for.

Am I off on the wrong tangent here?

If anyone was to get a bronze statue, it should be Erin Phillips for her multi sport achievements.

An excerpt from this reads as follows:

This statue is for everyone who had endured this intolerable behaviour long before the events of 19 March and had been made to feel inferior for being fans of women’s sport their whole lives. On that night, the world learnt that the women’s sports community has a voice, one that is passionate, powerful and unrelenting. It is a voice that altered the course of history and achieved something that had been so rare before Harris’ image was reposted with an unreserved apology: acknowledgment.

For everyone who spoke up, challenged the hate and called on the broadcaster to re-post the photo, this statue is a reminder of the collective strength a community can have to affect change. This image will forever be a symbol for the moment a marginalised community raised its voice and it was heard.

When we see that kick now, we see more than a kick. And for that, Tayla Harris is the perfect person to have this honour bestowed on her. Hopefully she is just the first in a long line of women in football and sport who receive acknowledgment in this way, but her grace in lending her voice to a campaign that was thrust upon her and boldness in becoming a leader for a community that needed one, is beyond admirable and deserving of a bronze statue. It is fearless.

Seen several people now on the socials (all blokes) perplexed by this extremely complicated decision.

Symbolism, look it up.

I think it's a good statement.

Probably settles my argument with myself that other social moments have been recognised with statues, although Norman’s took 50yrs.

Thin line between that and tokenism. In my opinion they've taken something that wasn't significant and decided to make it significant.

What's the stat, something like there's more public statues of horses in Australia than women.

This statue is a symbol of standing up to bullies and deadshits, bravo!

I think they're @#$%&! hilarious. Who wouldn't want to see a bronze statue of Chris Scott's eyes popping out, or Sam Mitchell's "jab jab" ?

On the Harris statue, I think it's brilliant. It was a landmark moment for women's footy that captured the imagination of thousands and had intolerant flower nationwide showing their true colours :clap:

Why can't we have both? So, when the time is right, let's hope that happens too.

The more we value and celebrate the achievements of women in society the better.
