I was wondering what people's verdict was on fox footy. I watched quite a bit of it on the weekend, but I think the one area they are lacking is footage of past games.

For example, I would be more than happy if they could show footage from the 1979 season - especially the 1979 second semi final.

If anyone else would like to put some pressure on them to release more footage of Carlton games I would suggest emailing to :

They used to have a 2nd Channel which was devoted to showing past games, last time they met and replays of last week's games. Now they try to combine it all in one channel and we miss out.

They ceratinly have no shortage of footage: One of the thing which the "consortium" bought with the rights was the right to use all archival footage.

The major achilles' heel of Fox Footy is the flower commentators, who would be better off calling bush league matches.

I think that's only half-right, Kaptain Kouta. They've got access to all the old channel 2 archival footage, but none of the old channel 7 stuff.

Not totally sure that is right - you sometimes catch a channel 7 replay but they cover up the channel 7 logo with a black square - generally they are channel 2 games though

Didn't they just spend the entire summer showing past games? They showed a lot of games from 2001 which were from 7. Also showed 99 Prelim from 7.

They only have rights to Channel 7 stuff from certain years I'm sure I read somewhere.

The 90's stuff is Channel 7.

The earlier stuff is from the ABC with the world's most boring commentators.

Footage from the 1990's and even the 1980's is relatively easy for them to obtain. For the 80's they rely on channel 2, as channel 7 deleted most of their tapes of football matches. "the home of football" yeah right.

But i am sure channel 2 have some footage from the 1970's - it is just that foxtel aren't showing them.

anything from 1979 - if it comes on can anyone let me know.

Well that might explain it then...

One thing I've always wondered is why do they never show any footage from the years 1988-1992? Not that there's anything special about those years but having watched the channel for ages it's pretty strange?

The camerwork on the weekend was disgraceful...surely this being a purpose built stadium for AFL you would think the cameras would be in an optimal position....also didn't help with the roof being open and play going in and out of the light / dark areas.

Have a read of the above Dr.S ;)

I think FoxFooty is okay. I make a point of always watching On The Couch and Fox League Teams, the new Saturday Central show looks okay, but I also like listening to the 3LO coverage on Saturday afternoons. Remember that in Canberra I'm pretty starved of decent media coverage of the AFL, unlike Melbourne where effectively SEN is 24hrs of footy.

I think Fox is clearly hampered by what it can broadcast, be that old games or having to delay H&A games when they could be showing them live. If Fox was given greater freedom then I reckon it would be better.

Oh, anyone know why Anthony Hudson and Clintin Grybas appear to have less time on air this year? Grybas shits me a bit, he moves around in his bloody chair too much on WLF and is rarely open to an alternate view to his won. But as a match day caller I don't mind him. Same with Huddo, I don't him, either as a show host or match caller.

Jim Wilson was clearly struggling to get the hang of The Winners last Sunday, hopefully he'll get better and develop some new cliche's so the cycle runs arounf a bit slower when there's more than a handful in regular rotation. He'll get there, don't you worry about that!

Blues 2005,

good point about games from 1988 to 90.

I would be more than happy to watch Carlton matches from that period.

Meldrum, Kernahan, Naley etc all played in that period.

There was also a match against Geelong around that period where the blues were down by 40 points at half time (or thereabouts) and came back to win. Why don't they show these matches instead of the matches from 2001-2003 over and over again?

I'll take Tim Lane & Doug Heywood over Lou & Landy any time.

I'm pretty happy with Fox Footy. Living in an NRL state, it provides a great link to the best footy code in the world. 24/7 footy...can't complain about that.

Now the season has started, it's even better.
