It's only 2 years ago that the opening game of R1 was the two previous grand finalists.

I assume that was a covid-related decision, but still.

I'm bored of Thursday night matches.

ANZAC Day should be the previous year's grand finalists.

For no reason other than I decided just now.

I like it. At least there's a formula.
Sure the AFL Commission can corrupt things (such as with Tribunal decisions, to make things they want happen))

Queens birthday should be during Mardi Gras.

The two winners of trade week - so Essendon* vs someone every year.

The Essendon* “wins”…

A 35 yo ruckman from the bottom side, an average defender from the same side, a midfielder on $700k who can’t hit a barn door from another bottom side, a not bad midfielder from a top 4 team, keeping a slow midfielder on their list at $700k who can’t hit a barn door.

Keep it up bombers!

I'm hoping that E* keep on winning the draft exactly like they have over the past 20 years.

So it seems they have a grand master plan for round 1 that involves carlton. Will it end up grand master b?

I actually like the idea of us starting a bit earlier and then getting an extra break between weeks. Seems like an advantage really.

Replay of the prelims would make nice round one games

and this year actually works naturally in the northern states

Still a bumper crowd for Thursday Tiges Blues as first chance for the masses to get to the footy.

win win win

First round can become a northern states split round

Both clubs. It's one of the first things they request. It makes money for the club. If you don't like it - don't watch it!

Dont watch it . When you are up at 230 in the morning coz ya start work at 4 it makes it hard . Thats alright mate , cater to the elite . Don't worry about the little o'l workin" man .

Yeah I don't mind it - always think it's better to get last year's grand finalists in week 1 or 2

I don't hear you complaining about Friday night and weekend matches, but what about all the people who work in bars and cafes? What about the international pilots? I think it's more equitable the more you spread the games across the week. We're a 24/7 economy!

True Gex , but i wasn't responding on behalf of those guys , i was responding on behalf of the average joe . It would be interesting to canvas people in those industries " G " for there thoughts re footy . A lot of the people i know who work in those fields generally don't live for footy like us average joes . Still , it would be good to know all the same coz i gotta admit its a sizeable chunk of people .

Dursma admitted the Anzac Day clash, held exclusively by Effendopes and Pies, was a major drawcard for his decision to move to Effendopes.

This highlights the fact the AFL have still not addressed the unfair advantage they give Effendopes and Pies with the exclusivity of a Finals lik event during the year. This unfair advantage helps Effendopes become a destination club, proving the unevenness the AFL competition run by the current Commission.

Quote:
one thing he’s looking forward to with Essendon** is potentially featuring in marquee games throughout the home and away season.

“I'd be lying if I said it's not a massive factor,” Duursma said.

“I think that's really awesome and part of the reason that I chose Essendon** as a place that I'd like to be able to play.

“I think it's an amazing opportunity to be able to play in some of the biggest games that Australian football gets to hold.

“I think Anzac Day and Dreamtime at the ‘G is just an amazing opportunity and I'm so excited to be able to potentially be a part of that.

“If I'm lucky enough to be out there playing in any of those games, it'll be probably the biggest crowd that I've ever played in front of.

“I'm already itching to get out there.”

This event needs to be shared or at the very least the opportunity to play on Anzac Day should be available to every team in the competition.

I don't disagree with all this but no-one has mentioned that the media determines a lot of these games - they also get input into the schedule and hence why the last chunk of the season is not scheduled until part way through the season so they can see who they want playing in prime time. Annoys the hell out of me but it is what it is!
