Do you have any superstitions during the footy season and are they any different leading into finals?

Obvs, being based in Canberra, I watch most games on the telly and I’ll usually make sure I’ll wear a Carlton polo or t-shirt while watching the game. Nothing too odd there I guess. But prior to that I’ll make sure I don’t wear any colours of our opponent during the day before our game starts and ideally I’ll wear some navy blue. This week though, leading into the final against the Swans, it’s been as much blue as I can all week and definitely NO RED at all!

Another silly one I have is walking through bollards. When I come across four bollards in a row or two bollards in between a wall, so they kind of mirror the setup of goal and behind posts, all throughout the footy season I’ll make sure I walk through the middle bollards, aka the “goals”, because, obviously, our goal kicking accuracy depends on me.

I was reminded to post this thread after reading the Ghost’s confession about drinking from THE CUP!

Oooh....I wonder how HTP goes with bollards?

As a nervous Nellie I have plenty.

One simple and probably stupid one is that on the day before and day of a game, if I see a dropped eyelash of mine, I MUST pick it up and blow it away while wishing for a Carlton win. I do it every time.

I updated Soapy Vallence last week re: finals and all things Carlton. We've caught up over the years given his close proximity to Nan, but it dawned on me that he needed an update given our rare foray into September. He was in good spirits.

I only read TC during quarter and half time breaks. I never read whil play is live. That was my hard and fast rule.

Until.

The match against GC that we had to win, I paused the broadcast for five minutes and accidentally read tc when I thought it was a 3/4 time, but play was live, and we kicked a goal. So I waited and read it agin, and we kicked another goal! This continued until,we won the match.

Needless to say I didn’t know what to do during the GWS match, and we lost.

No idea what I’ll do tomorrow night. Probably go back to my tried and proven method, just like Voss went back to two rucks and abandoned the Harry in the ruck experiment..

I have one of those navy and orange Carlton Respects beanies from a year or so ago.

Every time I've worn it to the footy we've lost.
Every time I've taken it to the footy (but not actually worn it) we've won.

So I just stuff it in my bag and put it on at the final siren now.

I’ve still got the jocks I wore at the 1979 Grand Final, they’re blue of course.

I’ve worn them at every Carlton Grand Final since - didn’t help in 86, 93 or 99 - but I’ve still got them.

funny enough i was going to start a thread this week titled “i just wanna enjoy the final(s), but…”

i don’t call this superstition but i do feel like me watching games live either at the ground or TV for the last decade or two i seem to be a jinx.

season ending injury to a key player last time i went to a game. Kruzer if i recall. lost a game we were favourites to win. was horrible to watch the bad luck, the fumbles, the switched off appearance.

somehow i figured jumping in my car and driving towards the ground used to turn the game around for us. over and over. i even convinced a guy who was living in my spare room who was west coast mad. didn’t believe me at first but i did it so many times when we turned a big deficit around and won or came very close he became a believer.

i watched a few games at the start of this season on tv and we won them and we didn’t get injuries. amazing. then the shitty losing streak. so i started getting on the road bike and riding around Princess Park and Carlton/North Carlton.

logic being, i figured they’re mentally fragile so the butterfly effect is in play. they are influenced by confidence or lack of it. many times when i didn’t start until second quarter we lost the first badly.

anyhow after hitting bottom four i didn’t give a shit anymore. i went away for a 10-day silent meditation retreat and cut my long hair off as renunciants do. was the week before the bye and the bye. we won and as it turns out, turned around the collective depression.

so decided don’t watch for the rest of the season. just monitor the score at end of each quarter. any time i listened we played a terrible quarter.

but FINALS!!!

can’t sit this out can i?

so to ease my way into contention i decide i’ll watch one quarter of VFL Blues v Gold Coast Suns.

was about 10 min into 2nd quarter. we were down 2 goals to 4 goals. Suns kicked 9 goals (or was it 11?) in the remaining part of quater. wanted to turn it off but it was a scientific experiment. couldn’t cheat.

suns did same again next quarter. by fourth it became an arm wrestle.

first quarter our AFL side also on a mental holiday.

so what do i do?

pre-nominate a quater i’ll watch so you can all see how i jinx them watching it live? which quater? second seems safest to me.

i came to the local half way during the third quarter of this Dees v Pies game and all of a sudden Dees turn it on. which is what i wanted so complete opposite of jinx. go figure.

as a kid and teen and post-teen i went to a tonne of games. entire seasons, esp flag years. so wasn’t always this way.

How you handle the head is extremely important.

Good. Do that.

This year, it's been that I don't watch the game live. For the moments I have, it's always been followed by the opposition scoring a goal.

But it's finals now, so I guess I don't need to do that any more right??
