That's a real blow. Loved Wes. An old fashioned, dick-in-the-dirt, take-no-prisoners, "man's man".

As a footballer: a very good tough above average defender. Good enough to play in a premiership. Saw Peter Hudson's first VFL game against Wes. Brutal. Couldn't kick, but was a fair mark for his size.

As an administrator: 2nd to none. Ruthless and successful. Did whatever was needed. Only mistake I ever saw him make was getting obsessed with Marchesani because he'd played a good game on Doull. Wes's judgement was impaired on that one occasion. But we can thank Wes for his part in at least 3 premierships.

As a man: a very handsome and classy guy who loved the good things in life - which is probably what killed him. He loved a good conversation and could talk about a surprisingly large number of topics, make sense in all of them, and display an incredible level of tolerance for opposing views.

Vale Wes. Condolences to the family, and a special shout out to his friends, especially his good mate Percy Jones, who must be devastated.

Sad news...Legend!

I've known this was coming for a while but I'm still shocked.

Wes in many ways was everything I disagreed with in the world and yet someone whose company I never failed to enjoy. He was a spectacular example of the fact that a person's politics are not the person which is something that many of us (myself included) could benefit from remembering.

I had dinner with Wes on a fairly regular basis over the last ten years. Our only connection was that I was Percy's neighbour and he was Percy's friend.

And we both loved Carlton.

The club and the suburb.

And we're both shit-stirrers at times.

In retrospect that's quite a lot.

Each night would begin with him greeting me as "Comrade" and me replying with something less consistent but may have occasionally included "You right wing prick!" as a term of endearment.

What never ceased to amaze me about those Thursday night encounters was how diverse Wes's interests, knowledge, friendship groups and connections were. His friends were a weird mix of right-wing loons, lefty freaks and everyone in between.

One of my favourite memories of talking with Wes was our discussions of Carlton the suburb in the 1970s. When people talk about their love of football waning I don't need to look any further than those discussions about his life as a member of a team and a club that had a suburb as a home and his reflections on the life of that suburb and how inextricably enmeshed the football club was with it.

Percy's is closing down this weekend and Wes is gone.

Time for a drink.

Not much else to add to Synbad's, Moshe's and GWS's eloquent obituary.

Was the behind the scenes man to much of our success in the 70s and 80s, sadly missed.

Sad news.

I saw first hand how he cared for people at George Harris' funeral...went around and spoke with everyone...put a hand on their shoulder, smiled and told stories. I'm just wondering who's going to do it at Wes' funeral. What a legacy!

I used to have a newspaper cutting from Peter Hudson’s first game which included a pic of Wes, Vincent Waite and Adrian Gallagher giving Hudson a “Blue welcome”. Tough team, tough & great man.
