Clarko is a top coach but how would he go at our club. We are a mess.

If a coach like Clarko came in he would want to run and revamp the whole football department. The board's ego won't allow that. That's one problem MM has. How could we afford him anyway?

Personally I think we need a clean out and a proper process to recruit the best coach. No messiahs!

Q. What makes him a good coach
A. Good players.

If he could get Dangerfield and Dixon over the line I might re-consider.

 Wasn't a good list when he started.

3 time Premiership coach in 10 years. I call that impressive.

He had some fairly handy young fellas on the list when he got there. Roughy, Buddy, Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell, Brown

Clarko's Hawks were ordinary when he started, then the Hawks implemented a plan and executed to perfection. List Management 101 + Coach with a Game Plan + Club with a defined Culture, equals success.

If we get Clarkson we'll get him one even quicker.

If you have young players like Mitchell and Hodge on your list and then in one draft you get Franklin Roughead and Lewis, you are halfway there. He might be a good coach, but I don't want him near our club. Basically he is in the same position as Pagan and Malthouse when they came and various posters lauded them as saviours. The lesson from Hawthorn is to find the next great coach, not get their coach just because we throw so much money at him. When are we ever going to learn that you have to find people instead of taking people others have found. Apart from being an obnoxious cowardly thug, Clarkson also won't have the same energy etc he had when he started, and I doubt he would leave Hawthorn for any money. Why would he, they are a top side and have way more money than us anyway. When will people realise that just throwing money at people perpetuates rather than solves our problems

What we need to do is search for, identify and get the pillars of a great side. Cripps, Menzel and Docherty show signs of a Hodge, Mitchell and Lewis. We just need a Roughy, a Buddy and a Cyril. The coach could be one of many.

If we could secure a couple of big name free agents in the next two years, we'll be in good shape. Success breeds success.

It's much harder trying to pick the next great young coach than it is picking the next #1 pick.

Yes please.
Still at the peak of his powers as a coach, unlike when we got Pagan and Mick.
Still young enough to put in a long stint to see the job through.

Why would Clarkson leave what he's built there to come here?

Also, we're broke. So will we pay him with hyundai's and Mars bars?

No.

Wouldn't be where the money he would demand and he would just end up being another Pagan\malthouse as he would have to build the whole thing up from scratch like he has already done and don't think he would have the energy for it.

Need someone more in the mould of a hinkley, Walsh, Simpson etc

Do a proper process and a selection panel. Get a senior coach cheaper than what we are paying now and use the extra money to bolster the football department.
http://www.sen.com.au/news/05-15/patrick-smith-blues-crazy-not-to-tempt-clarko

Needs its own thread.

Generally I'm against going for an established coach & would be happy for us to search & interview, & choose a new guy who'd done a proper apprenticeship.

But the one exception I'd make is for this bloke. The Hawks were terrible when he took over...did a clean out, had a few misses in the draft but still built a super team.

Interested to hear from the haters - would you be able to just let it go?

Great coach.
I think they're having a laugh

Fatprick just wants to see us continue on our current cycle of chasing messiahs. If we were silly enough to sell the farm to try and get Clarkson, Smith would be the first one to gleefully sink the boots in if it went bad.

We're continually looking to repeat the same mistakes.
The coach isn't the priority at the moment, the football department structure is. If you want to get Hawthorn influence in, engage a group to review what we have in place and propose a structure that encourages accountability and proper process. Include some Hawthorn and Geelong names in it. Clubs that have implemented successful structures that have bought success and encouraged ambitious, intelligent, qualified people to play their role within the organisation. Dunstall, Parkin, names like that would be ideal to be involved.

Put the structure in place first and then engage the correct personnel to fill the roles. Interview a strong list of candidates, not a select few.
Who would have known Luke Beveridge would have jumped out of the woodwork?

We need to get past the messiah complex and back a strong football department in to bring results. A department that defines meaningful roles and spreads the responsibility and knowledge. Not a department that puts all of it's faith in one person.

CK have you learnt nothing?

How about this...We do not seek the answer...instead we begin to ask the right questions.

If you believe in silver bullet theories you probably also think the opposite.
You also believe in the one excuse does the opposite.
The carrazzo injury a few years back.. Yeah had injuries wait till next year.
Similar thing with our first wooden spoon season. Was just injuries.

The real problems are inderlying fundamental and numerous compounding

 Milne to be Clarko's assistant. Then, just before the finals, without telling Clarkson, Montagna could slip into the coaches box in Milne's place :sly:  .

Yes to Clarkson, but only if all the other peripheral stuff is sorted first. You know, that minor stuff like the board and establishing a clear direction that can be sold to the apathetic members.
