Part of Paul Roos success was that the playing group respected the way Paul used to play and the commitment he had to playing so they respected him as a coach - So when he asked -they did -because they knew thats How Roos was- It was more about a playing culture than a coaching technique- It was not much difference to when Jezza took over the Blues in 78 the players respected him and played for him -

I sense that as a lot of the players that Roos played with retired and moved on along with it went Roos and the the Swans playing commitment thus the slide down the ladder and the hand over to Longmire -

If we got Roos in would our playing group throw their bodies on the line for him like the Swans boys did - would it be like 89 when Jezza returned the players didn't have the desire or confidence to play for him that they did 10 years earlier - there would be hardly a player on our list who would know what Roos playing days were like

I liked Roos as a player
I thought he was a terrific coach and extracted everything he could out of the playing group he had
I would prefer him to Malthouse

But is he what we need at the moment I am not so sure

.....and , unlike Mm, he doesn't have obvious character flaws.

But I reckon the Doc is right. He looks perfectly happy with what he's doing and he's said nothing to suggest he'd even consider it.

Just like when my normal Doc said I had to give up smoking, hard liquor and dirty women.

Don't remember anything of the next 4 days.

How do you propose we ask? They've done very well out of property up there (bought '97 - sold '03, bought '03 - sold '11, bought '11) and aren't likely to move again soon. Not about money. It's about family. Lifestyle. You've a better chance of Bruce Doull giving the main speech at this years' B&F.

Like any negotiation, you need to talk to the guy, find out whats holding him back and deal with that and then find an itch and scratch it for him.

I can't tell you what would get him over the line but I refuse to believe that he isn't gettable. Him living in Sydney isnt an option.
Property is property, he doesnt have to sell it.

There are wives and mothers who sacrifice a hell of a lot more than Tammi would be if he got paid $1mil + per year and she had to move to Melbourne.

Just tell him in 35 years of footbal you have only won one flag - to get to AFL legends status you need to do more with your AFL career than being a bystanding puppet comments boy. Do you want to win AFL premierships do you want to be a legend ? Happy to lead the negotiating team lol

As opposed to using high draft picks for players that then are smashed on the park by re-treads?

Don't get me wrong - I'd love him at Carlton. But Tami's already sacrificed plenty. She calls the shots. I don't think Swann and Sticks are going to scratch her itch.

GET GODDARD!

Notwithstanding the belief that Roos wouldn't be interested I'd just like a coach that can get our players to consistently perform as a team as the Swans have done for the last 10 years or so.

Mind, having guys like Paul Kelly and Brett Kirk certainly laid a solid on-field foundation to follow.

Imagine Roosy at the B&F...

"So it's been a really close one in the B&F this year, and it gives me...well, it's a tough one isn't it, I mean do you or...you've just got to take every game into account, making such a big decision as this one...I'm just not so sure it's that simple, how do you....I suppose what I'm trying to say is that the winner of this years John Nicholls medal is....a very worthy one, and it's a bit both ways really, we have a winner but I guess there's a loser as...well, in as much as we can call people losers, I just don't know, it's a tough one. What do you think Gerard?"

Fair dinkum has he ever started a sentence and seen it out to it's completion?

I wouldnt totally discount Roos.
He's had a bit of a stupid smirk on his face when discussing Carlton of recent. He's also been hesitant to lay the boots in when he's been happy to in the past.
I suspect something is afoot.

Either that or he's constipated.

  Not to mention Reiwald and Gartlett. (Still, I wouldn't mind him here).

Roos needs to be told also that his opportunity to return to coaching won't last forever.
Too long in the media and he will stop being asked.
