It has become painfully obvious that the Herald Sun has chosen Carlton as it pet topic for tabloid gossip and ridicule. I fear this vendetta will continue for months, doing untold damage to the reputation of our club.
I believe there is only one way to stop this and in the process redeem ourselves for the boat cruise debacle. The players need to make a massive gesture of goodwill to the community. If every player donated one rounds salary to a chosen charity, this would wipe out all damage that has been done. They could wear special jumpers for the game and really promote it. Overnight the perception of Carlton players would change from being selfish and arrogant to caring and generous.
It’s a big call but a REAL sacrifice it’s the only way to fix the current situation.
It's a great idea, and one that should probably be considered irrespective of any other matters.
In terms of expecting it to change the mantra of the Herald-Sun, nah, won't achieve much. I suggest you just deal with it.
Agreed. They'll only see it as more of an excuse to bring up the past indiscretions and the fact we're being reactive to the negative press. Every story about us will end with a mention to the booze cruise, and given the intelligence of your average Carlton-basher, that's what they'll remember from reading it. Nothing we can do about it.
The best thing we can do is stop giving them ammunition, forcing them to raw even longer bows to get their stories and then go on the attack for the slander we've endured. We can whinge and complain all we like about how our club is being portrayed, but let's not be so delusional to think we've done nothing to justify it.
