We need our tall forwards to start kicking more goals.

I agree. That's what makes Collingwood's forward line so dangerous. Key position monsters who can (and do) kick goals. Very good small forwards.

We've got the very good small forwards. We don't yet have the big guys. When we do, our small forwards will become even more dangerous.

After 6 games in 2011, our goal kicking spread is fair to say quite a bit different to some of the main themes in this thread:

Garlett - 14 from 6.... 2 1/3 a game.
Walker - 13 from 6 .... just over 2 a game.
Betts - 11 from 6 ... just under 2 a game.

Then we have:

Thornton with 5 from 3, including 4 against GC
Waite with 8 from 6 at just over a 1 a game
Ellard with 2 from 2
Setanta with 1 from 1

Simpson, Judd, Joseph, Murphy, Warnock and Curnow are each at or about 1 goal every 2 games.

Good to see.

Garlett has been fantastic so far this year.

Taking it another way, over the past 10 years only the following players have managed 30 goals + for the year:

2001 - Koutoufides, Lappin, Whitnall
2002 - McKernan
2003 - Fevola
2004 - Fevola
2005 - Fevola, Waite
2006 - Fevola
2007 - Fevola, Fisher
2008 - Fevola
2009 - Fevola, Betts, Murphy
2010 - Betts, Garlett, Waite
2011 - Walker....Garlett....Betts?

Interesting to see that we see 3 chief goal scorers in each year we've made the finals, although the Fevola / dark years had overarching causes relating to our woeful list.

So Walker could be our best non-Fevola performance since...Whitnall over 1998/1999? (Assuming he slots 50 from a full year)?

Wow, amazing that it was way back in 2001 that Lappin just missed the 50 goal mark. Thought it was half way through the decade..

Many, many moons ago when we were a dominant side we used to have a fwd kick over 50 goals but a string of others kick their 20 - 30 goals for the side. I am talking circa 79 - 82, our mosquito fleet running brigade kicked a lot of goals for us.

Share the goals around boys

Interesting stats. I was a little staggered to see that Rod Galt kicked 34 goals in 1979. I remember his playing a few games, but clearly he played a lot more than I remember.

And how come Jezza only kicked 33 in 1972? Didn't he play at full forward much that year?

We recruited Greg Kennedy in 1972 and he played Full Forward for most of the year to great effect ( he kicked 12 goals in Round 21 against Hawthorn).

Jezza played mainly in the Centre and Half Forward line that year (33 goals not bad).

Towards the end of the season Greg Kennedy got injured and lost form during the finals - Nicholls rejigged the side for the Grand Final putting Jezza at Full Forward and the rest is history.

This is amazing....even if you take out the FF, it's still amazing.

Great stats work SOC - a good consistent spread of goalkickers did the trick for Blues in those premierships years - barring the freak of nature in Jezza in 1970 & possibly Sticks in 87 which was from CHF, there wasnt a massive goalkicker in the lot.

One thing those old stats don't show is ..... goal assists. Just a hunch, but I'll bet anything that in 1979-1982, Maclure would've had heaps. He was really the best goal-assisting CHF I've seen (before people talked about goal assists). His contesting, tapping on, shepherding, handballing were amazing. And then in the big games, at the big moments, he'd rise to the occasion and pull out a pack mark, and kick a "captain's goal" from 50 out (even when he wasn't captain).

One of our most underrated players.

(And I love his media work........)
