Some people seem to be confused about the rules governing the long term injury list, with regards to Fisher.

Following are the LTI rules from the AFL Collective Bargaining Agreement.

From reading this it looks like Fisher will not be able to play for a further 8 weeks, unless he was put on the LTI at the start of the year. Does anyone know exactly when he was put on the LTI. The club is saying he will return in late May, indicating he has already been on the LTI for four weeks at least.

---------------------------

12. LONG TERM INJURY LIST
12.1 Each AFL Club may apply to the AFL General Manager – Football Operations to
transfer a Player suffering a long term injury from its Primary List to its Long Term
Injury List. A long term injury means an injury or illness suffered by a Player
which, in the opinion of the AFL Medical Officer, after consultation with the AFL
Club Medical Officer, will prevent or is likely to prevent a Player, having due
regard to his health and safety, from participating in a Match for a period of not less
than eight weeks from the date the injury or illness is diagnosed.

12.2 (a) A Player’s name may only be added to the Long Term Injury List with the
Player’s consent and with the approval of the AFL General Manager –
Football Operations.
(b) An injured Player who is transferred to an AFL Club’s Long Term Injury
List is ineligible to play in the AFL Competition or a State Body competition
for the period:
(i) the Player’s name is on the AFL Club’s Long Term Injury List; or
(ii) of eight weeks,
whichever is greater.
The period shall commence from the day on which the
AFL General Manager – Football Operations gives his approval for the
injured Player to transfer to the AFL Club’s Long Term Injury List.
(c) An AFL Club is unable to transfer an injured Player to or from its Long
Term Injury List after round 18 of the AFL Premiership Season in each year.
12.3 For the period a Player remains on the Long Term Injury List of an AFL Club, that
AFL Club may apply to the AFL General Manager – Football Operations for
permission to temporarily promote a Rookie to its Primary List and subject to
paragraph 4.7 of Schedule B, any payments made to the Rookie for the period that
the Rookie remains on the Primary List as a replacement for a Player on the Long
Term Injury List, shall be excluded from the Total Player Payments of the AFL
Club.
12.4 At least seven days prior to the National Draft Selection Meeting, each AFL Club
must determine whether a Player on the Long Term Injury List is to be included in
the AFL Club’s Primary List for the following AFL Season.
16
12.5 Football Payments made to a Player on the Long Term Injury List shall be included
in calculating the Total Player Payments for the AFL Club.
12.6 When an AFL Club transfers a Player from the Long Term Injury List back to the
Primary List (“the date of transferâ€

See my post on the other thread Jarusa, I am gathering from reading between the lines that we actually did the switch a while ago - perhaps the club said to Setanta - its yours for the taking up until round X, do this this and this in the 2's and we'll give you a shot. There is no way that we would defer Fisher's return, he's too popular and too good. It must have happened a while ago and the Club kept quiet about it. I think Setanta has the month before switching back to the rookie list when Fish comes back late May.

Jarusa,

I'm assuming the club has been a little sneaky and have had Fisher on the LTI for around a month.

Thanks Jarusa for posting the Rules. I had just posted the blurb below (in yellow) on another thread but now find that my guess at interpreting the rule was way out due to the following clause....

"The period shall commence from the day on which the AFL General Manager – Football Operations gives his approval for the
injured Player to transfer to the AFL Club’s Long Term Injury List. "

This indicates that either the club is wrong in stating that Setanta can only be elevated until end of May or that Fisher was approved for LTI 5 weeks ago without any publicity whatsoever. Either way it appears strange. Is the club playing its cards close to the chest for strategic reasons or did someone make a boo boo???

"This question occurred to me too MDH27. The Club Update emailed to members says " Setanta is on the senior list until Brad Fisher returns from injury, which is expected to be in late May."

My guess is that the rules must allow for elevation of a rookie at anytime during the course of another players LTI providing the LTI lasts 8 weeks or more.

If Setanta gets a gig and plays a few good games he would still have to return to rookie list unless we suffer another LTI. This happened to Peverill at the Bombers a couple of years ago. He was elevated ( i think for Hird) was in Essendons best for weeks but then had to revert to rookie status when Hird recovered."

Fisher will be guaranteed to be injured for a period of time that qualifies Setanta.]
Fisher will be back in 4 weeks.

Any reason why Carlos was not elevated or the other rookies when Fish was injured. OK Carlos needed more development but public a acknowledgement of his hard work would have been a good thing.

I think it was more the private acknowledgement aspect - a challenge set by Pagan for each guy in the 2's. You saw him do it with Better Betts, who nailed his oportunity, and I think he'll do it with Simmo over & over again. Setanta had a to perform to get the chance and Pagan must have seen something to allow it to happen now.

I think Denis sees exuberance, genuine excitement and passion in Setanta.
Footy is not just about statistics. setanta brings the intangibles with him.
Message to a few of the others on the list too...

Plus he will add unpredictability.. he will chase unlike one opr two who predictably wont chase.

If I heard correctly, Fish indicated Tuesday night that he is aiming to play in the VFL in 3 weeks time, vs Williamstown (Sat May 28th).

Therefore he must have been placed on the LTI at least 5 weeks ago.
