Quote:
At Carlton, the final chapter in the Blues' long-running coaching saga closed this week when Northern Bullants coach Barry Mitchell was told his services were no longer required.

Despite efforts by new senior coach Brett Ratten to retain Mitchell, the prevailing view of senior Blues was that Mitchell's time at the club needed to end.

A long-time assistant, Mitchell and former Blues coach Denis Pagan fell out in a bitter dispute last season.

I posted this in the recruitment thread - didn't know where to put it :)

I think the interesting thing is that Ratten was told "nope, he's not staying" even though he wanted him to stay. Is Ratts being compromised?

Thank you Greg Swann.

Disappointed that Ratten puts his friendship first

My understanding is that Mitchell has a very good read on the game.

It comes down, of course, to how he communicates with the players, and how they respond to him.

What was the inside word on how the players felt about Barry Mitchell?

Apparently against Ratts wishes and you bet against Sticks and Bears, but Swannie and co have prevailed. With Libba being shunted off and now Mitch, we will almost have a clean slate for the preseason. Riley was the first new appointment, who is next...Sumich/Bond/McKenna? 8)

Reading that article, looks like the senior players had their say on the matter regarding the unprofessional working between both coaches.I think maybe they thought both destroyed their confidence and season by not getting along. I think the senior group wanted a change and didn't want Ratten friendship get in the way of the team finally getting some success.

Where does it say Rattens "friendship" with Mitchell compromised the issue?
Perhaps Ratten just believed Mitchell was the best person for the job. :?

Who knows, they may now get Neale Daniher and we'll have the old Melbourne firm back in action.

Pagan still hurting the club even after he's gone! Mitchell is a huge loss.

Agreed the closet has finally been cleaned

A fresh start into 2008 is what we need and Corsisca would easily qualify for being the New coach of the VFL

Interesting that the news was buried at the end of an article announcing St Kilda's Maguire has signed a new deal???

Sad............... I really liked Barry Mitchell, and i get the feeling that quite a few of the players did too (Setanta Especially).

Really, did he do anything wrong? All he did was accept an offer of a head coaching role?

..took them long enough to get rid of him.. ..what a shambles, every day that he remained with us he was a tangible reminder of the complete rabble our board was, and by letting him remain he cast further doubt on the new board..

..he simply had to go, and quite frankly i can't see it being anything remotely close to a hindrance for us..

He has had a fair run and good luck to him in the future

Good move really considering he has been there through out the last 6 years - Good time for a change

That's an absurd statement.

To me it shows that a lot of the bad relations and enmity between Pagan and Mitchell didn't come from Pagan's side alone.

Did he actually achieve anything in his time there?
