Fox Sports 1, while it wasn't a great game, it is a rare opportunity to get a glimpse of how good Peter Motley could have been. He was a rare shining light in this game.

It's hard to remember a time when losing a grand final was the worst that could happen to us in a year. Always great to relive those old memories.

When are they showing 1987 though???

Was there that year - my one and only GF to date. A disappointing way for Mr Doull to leave the game.

Wish I left it for the following year.

Indeed Motts is a tragedy I think many of us still feel. Who knows what he could've achieved :(

The one thing that really blew me away is the fact that Motley and Gibbs almost look like the same person.

In the hun yesterday there was a story on Bryce, and Motley was mentioned a couple of times. Particularly their similar frame.

Has Motts ever been formally honoured by the club at all?

My only other Carlton Grand Final was in 1999

I did see Collingwood lose in 2002-3 though :-D

An observation of note, or otherwise, from this match. Four senior coaches were spawned from the players in this game. None of them played for Carlton.

Yes.

I am lucky, we all are.

I was there in '79. 81, 82, 87 and 95.

Since I was born we also won in 68 70 72. Thats 8 Flags, 1 every 5 years!!

In the same time Geelong - 0

I have forgotton more Grand Finals than StKilda have played in!

Coupla observations from this game Des English was still at the top of his game. Shane Robertson was a ripper. Mullets were very in at Carlton.

how refreshing to see common sense umpiring without posturing.

And no matter how bad the decision was, the players simply got on with it.

Loved wathcing Rhyce give Ayres a few on the chin although Ayres did go on and win the Norm Smith!

A few things stood out to me for this game.

1) Motley...he was good...VERY good. Very classy and full of poise...am glad he played for the Blues. Truly a champion in the making. You're a top bloke Motts!

2) The game was so much harder compared to now. No soft free kicks, players played the game tough and hard. Put a few current generation players into that era and they wouldn't have lasted a season.

3) Kernahan didn't play that well did he? But he fooled everyone in the years to come.

Actually there was 5 coaches-to-be in that Hawthorn team. I forgot Buckenara, he probably wishes everybody else did too.

Last night was the first time since the day it was played, I had watched this grand final. As a young man of eleven, I really remember struggling with the concept of us losing!

However, my question is - how come Tim Lane was commentating? Was he working at Seven at the time, or was this one of the years when the ABC had the broadcast rights?

Prior to 1987, Channel 7 and Channel 2 used to put together their own commentary teams so they could re-broadcast the replays of games that eveniing - and also Channel 2 used to broadcast live to regional areas that Channel 7 didn't reach.

So what FOXTEL showed was Channel 2's version of the 1986 Grand Final (we didn't win that version either  ).

In 1987 - Channel 7 didn't even bid for the TV Rights for VFL or put in a very lowball bid - and Channel 2 had the exclusive rights to it.

I think this was the year that the VFL tried to milk more money out of Free to Air stations by offering exclusivity - Channel 7 (under new owners Christopher Skase) tried to play a game of brinkmanship and lost.

Thats my memory of it others may have a clearer explanation of it.
