It's no secret that i am a massive Mark Allen (from SEN) fan, always listening to his 'chasing birdies' program & just whenever he is on.

This guy just oozes positivity and profesionalism....................you wouldn't think it from being a Collingwood supporter (boom-tish )

anway, onto the point............................

I've quoted Mark Allen on TC in regards to Goal Kicking. He made reference to other sports such as Golf and Basketball where they put emphisis on practise on general skills & not just training drills.

For exampe, Mark once made mention of studying in the USA and his room-mate was playing College basketball. He went along to training one day to watch him and was facinated at the end of training (after all the drills & set-play scenarios) that each player was made to shoot 100 baskets from around the court before anybody can go home.

He now uses this in his Golf tutoring,...................and it makes peferct sense.

For those of you who don't know, Mark Allen is now Goal Kicking Coach for the Calder Cannons despite having never played profesional football before!!!!!!!!!

It's all about his positivity and leadership! But also because he is just generaly clued-on to what it takes to be a profesional sportsman. He has a knack of creating self-belief in those he teaches.

I could see him being a wonderfull benifit to kids like Kennedy, waite & Hartlett.
I'm not suggesting that he'll teach em how to lead, mark, etc nor do i think he'll be able to offer them tips on how to kick the ball or anything like that.
But what he will be able to do is help them create a sense of self-belief which is what i think they are really lacking.

Ryan, don't know much about Mark Allen, but everything you said makes perfect sense. You don't need to be an AFL guru to develop and teach players how to believe in themselves and get the most of out of themselves. I think it's a good suggestion. We sure could use some additional player development resources. I know often you hear that player psychologists are credited with getting players to perform to their potential.. the old saying that the game is 80% above the shoulders (I think that was the ratio?)

secret to goal kicking exists in Brendan Fevola:

- excellent technique (regardless of Dwayne's opinion on his grip)
- the desire to want the ball in his own hands at all times
- the ability to not think that much

yeah good point, but you could show that grip to another player and he could shank it easilly.

Fevola's skills is his confidence and self belief..............which is the main reason as to why, despite his hissy-fits and sooks & off-field antics, i still believe he should be our captain.

NYTDOG..........i think your right, its around 80% above the shoulders. and right now, i see some of our youth (Kennedy, Hartlett, even Russell & Bower) lacking in that. Somebody like Mark Allen would do wonders for them

Calders goal ratio has been very good, although there was one game i noticed they kicked 10goals 20behinds or something like that...............although it was a shocking day (weather wise).

But, regardless of goals, those kids (Calder) are on fire and have to be hot favourites to go all the way.

It's pretty self evident actually rather than contradictory. There's no point practicing if your practicing the wrong things.

I think the ratio of the game which is above your shoulders depends a bit on the size of your head with relation to the size of your body. For example, if Herman Munster was playing footy, the ratio would have to be different, wouldn't it?
Then again, men are often accused of thinking with their dicks, which would place the ratio more like 80% below the waist. This may in turn explain why a certain former captain of Denis's previous club was so good.
