Well a page dedicated to the club song has now been created in the Blueseum.

Feel free to add to it if you think it needs some more info.

Comes complete with a 1920's version of 'Lily of Laguna' streamed from the site.

The lyrics are rather quaint.

"I know she likes me ..... because she said so"

Thanks and well done on the Blueseum Club Song page! :-D

It would great for anyone to add their own (pre-60s) knowledge of the lyrics...

I also remember reading a version which had the 4th line as, 'We're the only team ALL Carlton knows', but we don't want any more controversy, do we? :?

I'm glad this thread is ere. For a few years now I thought I had been singing the wrong song. I was too scared to bring it up with other Carlton mates just incase I was wrong.

I will be singing 'UP' once again!!!! '

and before someone quotes this and says you will be waiting a while to sing 'UP' again I say BOO to you! I sing the song once a week when I watch an old game that we won........ Think i might watch the 95 GF now

Just a bit of an update.

After buying a pre-amp I can now connect my record player to the PC and transfer my vinyl to mp3 format. :-D

So the first thing I transferred were my CFC records.

The songs can be listened to on this page:
http://www.blueseum.org/cfc/tiki-index. ... =Club+Song

There is the well know Fable singers version and quite a different version from 1967.

Enjoy.

That's a playlist file to enable streaming of an mp3 on the internet.

For those that missed it on the last page there are now a couple of versions of the club song that can be listened to on the Blueseum.

http://www.blueseum.org/cfc/tiki-index. ... =Club+Song

The familiar Fable singers version and a very different 1967 version.

My grandfather played a few games for Carlton in the late 20's and used to sing this song:

Cheer, cheer, cheer the boys of Carlton,
They're only now a coming up to fame,
We will run them all around, on their own or any ground,
If they only play a fair and honest game.

Thank god they thought to change it!

What a turkey that was....all Carlton supporters at the ground hated it. Players were so disheartnened that they didn't even bother trying to win.

At one stage back in the late 70's as well as playing our traditional club song "We are the Navy Blues" they used to play "Blue is the Colour, Football is the Game" as well, after a win. This I believe is the Chelsea Club Song.

FYI - at the start of the 89 season the players sang 'Blue is the Colour' on a membership tape. I think I still have it somewhere. This song was played quite often in the early 80s after our theme song when we had won. The bluebirds also used to have their own song - good memories that period of time.

I used to have a record of "Blue is the Colour".

From memory it goes something like this ...

"Blue is the colour,
Football is the game,
We're all together,
and winning is our aim,
So cheer us on through the sun and rain,
Cause Carlton, Carlton is our name"

That's the first verse, i can't remember the rest.

When I fist started going to the footy in the mid-70s, it was definitely UP. I've still got the single somewhere, and it too is UP.

Also, notice how when the players sing the beginning bit (da-da-da-da-da)...the last da-das are different to the way it is on the single.

Not sure if this is going to work, but I'll give it a go...

Da da da da da...
Da da da da da...
Da da da da da da da da da...

Then...

Players sing it as... da da da (each of them held as a longer note)

Actual song is...da da da da (second goes up, 3rd and 4th go down).

Does that make ANY sense to ANYONE?

Point is, the players somewhere along the line have taken poetic license and diverted from the original. Maybe they have with the US as well.

Funny, I took my niecw and nephew to the Melbourne Victory game at the Dome the other week, and on the way back in the car, to stop them from losing the plot (late night for them!), I taught them those exact words to Blue is the Colour. Top tune I reckon.

From memory that 70's version of the song "Blue is the Colour" was recorded and sung by the actual playing group at the time.

Hi guys I've escaped from BigFooty and joined a real forum!
Anyhow back on topic, ny grandfather always claims that the lyrics are "send up". He reckons it was always that way and somehow along the line people starting singing "send us". Another thing he claims is the original words were also "We are the only club from old Carlton Town" and not "We are the only club old Carlton knows"

According to him the real lyrics are:

We are the Navy Blues,
The Old dark Navy Blues,
We're the team that never lets you down,
We're the only team from old Carlton Town.

We have all the champions
They like to send up
But we keep our ends up
And let them know they've been playing
against the famous old dark blues.

Does anyone remember that shocker of a song from the 1980's called 'We are the Navy Blues' that went something like

We are the Navy Blues
Woo-ooo-ooo-ooo

Repeat 120 times to end.

Had a bad Bryan Adams like guitar intro and then a barfworthy chorus sung by a guy who was a Braithwaite / Axl Rose offspring.
