Did anyone see it last night?

Murphy snr said that he has told many young players that unless they are kicked out of their club, why leave? Having from Fitzroy to Noth & Sth. Melbourne he said he didn't feel comfortable there & it was harder to be given a fair go at a new club after winning 5 B&F's with the Lions. So, looks like we are going to be stuck with little Murphy for a while   such a shame!!!!

Phil Pinnell still goes to watch the Blues every week. It was nice to hear some stories about when we were good!!

Did anyone else see it?

I saw the end of John Murphy and the start on Pinnell.

I had heard Murphy was goin to be on, but when I saw him I couldn't work out from the discussion who it was. Now it makes sense why they were asking if he knew the words to the Carlton song :)

How about Pinnell's fingers

Interesting comment by Phil Pinnell that Barassi used to have a rule that if someone on the list had not played a senior game before they turned 19 they would never be good enough and he would turf them quite quickly.

I always hated pinnel then one day he played a blinder (have not the foggiest against who but it may even have been a final) and from that day on I saw him differently.

This is a childhood memory - so I hope it is true.
After Phil Pinnell transferred to Melbourne, I remember being at a Carlton game at Moorabbin (while Phil was elsewhere playing for Melb) and there was a lady near us in the first few rows - which in those days were the fold up chairs you bought into the ground yourself - sceaming and yelling for the Blues.

I was told at the time that this lady was Phil Pinnell's wife. I wonder how Phil broke the news to her that he was changing clubs? I can also see why he goes every week - I doubt he would have a choice.

A playing memory I have of Phil from the early 70's was in a drawn game at Princes Park against Footscray. Funnily enough I was sitting in the Robert Heatley Stand. Scores were level and a Footscray player was trying to grab hold of the ball to rush it through for what would have been the winning point for them. Pinnell came in and bumped the player and ball over the boundary line. The siren rang - the game was a draw - 8 goals something each.

My only real memory of Pinnell is as an ABC around the grounds commentator on 3LO in the Peter "Smooth" Booth, Tim Lane, Crackers, Swan, Clearlo days...of course, I was in my bubble under the doona at the time.

Was good to see the interview and great seeing just how good a player he was.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Phil Pinell's wife is a Melbourne supporter. Phil goes to the occasional Carlton game but he mainly attends Melbourne games. He did say last night that he goes every week but didn't specify which games he attends.

He didn't talk about it last night (and I'm glad he didn't - showed too much class to bag the club) but he departed the Blues after the 1979 season rather acrimoneously & he didn't really appreciate the way Collo treated him one time during the mid 80's when he requested some tickets to a Carlton game for some overseas visitors.

The anger has definately settled & he now appears to have regained his soft-spot for the blues (he attended the final training session at Princes Park last year) but his wife definately did not get over the clubs treatment of Phil (a life member) & the above story about her at Moorabin could not be further from the truth.

Mick, the records I have say Paramount. Not sure where that club is ...

Also loved the bit on the show when John Murphy said he took young Marc to the Hall of Fame night, he said there were legends of the game introducing themselves to Marc rather than the other way around. Would have been a great experience for Marc.

Thanks Luca - I will bow to your first hand knowledge over my dodgy informant who was obviously guessing.

No problem Robert Heatley - Phil is a family friend. The reason I'm a Carlton supporter is because of Phil. I went to the 1979 grand final on my 10th birthday courtesy of Phil. He gave my parents his tickets to the game (& I tagged along) 'cos he missed out on selection - he was obviously extremely disappointed at not being part of the final 20. He also gave me his jumper from that year as a birthday present.

His mother-in-law remained a staunch Carlton supporter - perhaps it was her at Moorabin that day.

He wants me to pay royalties for using his name on this site....
