When are we going to get proactive and "make" a game for ourselves?

Season opener? Good Friday? Anything?

Tigers-Magpies may revisit season opener:

We don't need to anything like that. It is easier just to ask the AFL for money

George, There has been another thread on this team.

I have no doubt that there will be a resurgence from the baby blues from 2008 forward, and blockbusters for Carlton will return. We shouldn't wait till then to get talks underway for the introduction of Carlton Blockbusters in 2008. I don't think next year will be a good year for blockbusters, because blockbusters warrant big crowds.

But I agree we should be builbing up for blockbusters of the traditionals Carlton vs

Collingwood (maybe a Tuesday game...not)
Essendon* (maybe a Wednesday game...not)
Richmond (maybe a Thursday game...not)

On a previous thread ???? there were some really good ideas by some of the posters discussingthe issue in detail, including the following where we seem to have a good support base:

Eagles vs Blues (Queens B'day/ Anzac Day) in Perth
Adel/Port vs Blues (as above)

Discussions also included the pros and cons for a Good Friday game. It was a case of the Christians vs the Romans type of argument. Cardinal Pel is a Victorian(?), and he holds the cards there doesn't he?

Season opener would be a good start though George In fact I couldn't think of a better time to start the Ess vs Blues season opener next year.

George, from what I understand the club has been a little more proactive than we might first think on this matter, including looking at a Good Friday match. But I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I think the thought of Carlton even trying to host a Good Friday game would be a slap in the face to a large chunk of their supporter base who are Italians/Lebanese and by virtue of that, Catholic.

You won't see too many Catholic's going to a game of footy on Good Friday.

Without wishing to open up a religious can of worms, this is ludicrous. The religious beliefs of some should have no role in dictating when matches are played, but again, just like elsewhere in society, we can't upset the vocal minority. I appreciate the public holiday and all, but we non-religious folk have bugger-all else to do on Good Friday; I'd be at the footy in a jiffy, whether Carlton is playing or not. Straight after devouring a juicy steak for lunch, of course.

Time for common sense to prevail, surely.

Carlton v Essendon* - 32,000
Carlton v Port - 18,000

You can try and make all the games you like, but in the current climate, your fans need to stick with the club first.

Otherwise the mere suggestion of organised blockbusters would be embarassing.

Ona personal note, I hate the notion of "organised blockbusters". I wish we took part in none of them.

Ruckus lets avoid opening up a can of worms.

I'm all for removing Good Friday from the holiday calendar completely. Any Catholics that want to take the day off to observe the religious significace then do so.

The rest should shoot off to work and not worry about being bored on this day.

We'll say how interested the football community and the media are in a Good Friday game of footy when everyone has to work.

I respect and understand the significance of Good Friday. However, I also think Bill Heslop was right when he said "You can't stand in the way of progress!".

I accept there may be a few people, there may well be plenty, who would put their religious beliefs before attending a game of football, and more power to them … we do, after all, live in a free society where no person should live in fear of persuction due to religious beliefs. But we also live in a society of vast multicultural differences, and if Joe Gutnick had to miss out on a Grand Final in order to observe his religion then I think the Christians that choose to can miss out on a Good Friday game of footy, while those who do wish to attend can go along and enjoy the game.

I believe there is a market there for this fixture, and I believe Carlton should look to exploit it. Even though I accept that may, initially, or long term, alienate some fans.

It is not progress when you try to get bored people to a game of footy for lack of anything else to do on a day that means nothing to them.

I say get rid of the holiday, then no-one will be offended!

Why capitalise on a Christian holiday to do this?

How many times do we get told that we are in a secular society and we should be able to play footy on Good Friday?

Get rid of the holiday all-together !

Well that's a completely moot point - it'd be just another Friday then, wouldn't it, and it wouldn't be a discussion topic at all. Although, if the public were denied their usual Friday night football on an otherwise typical Friday, solely due to Catholic concerns, then the community and media would have something to talk about!

Isn't a "blockbuster" for us simply when we actually win a game against ANYBODY???!!! 8)

Ruckus - the point that I am trying to make [and obviously not very well] is that we shouldn't try to capitalise on a religious holiday that apparently means nothing to alot people so that we can have a game of footy.

It seems cheap to talk about playing a game on Good Friday because not everyone is Catholic - only to turn around and use the holiday as a means to get a blockbuster game up and running.
