Some people here crowing about modern football clearly don't know how to watch modern football. Our zones are there, but they are a bit poor. The problem was how we defended the corridor portion from 40 - 60 m from goal. Didn't try to force Adelaide wide a great deal and a good side will just have their mids run in and score from 45 m.
Most of everything else being said here is a complete exaggeration.
It's good to see that you're still a condescending upstart Jim.
FWIW, I thought both teams would be less than impressed with the game.
Both coaches tried plenty of moves including Anderson spending a large portion of the game tagging Goodwin in the middle.
Judd spent a fair bit of time early up forward and actually started the second half off half back.
Murph was rusty as expected, as was Waite.
Interestingly Henderrson was mentioned as a minor contributor in the hun report but I thought he was excellent. He beat Bock on the lead numerous times and when Rutten had a run on him as well, he continued to win the ball. The best aspect was his defensive work. The Crows base their game on drawing the opposition and giving the ball by hand and Carlton played into their hands beautifully. Henderson was extremely effective because he applied pressure from behind the ball carrier which is the best way to break them down.
As others have stated, Judd was good when required, Kruez was fantastic around the ground but I thought the Crows were effective at the centre bounces.
Their ability to protect the area from 4o'clock to 8 o'clock was fantastic and their ruckmen continually fed the ball into that area for their mids to win. Especially Goodwin.
No doubt Ratts will look back on the tapes and see areas to work on. The Crows ruckmen would stand at 5 'clock to feed the ball backwards but when he stood at 7 o'clock, the mids knew to protect the area forward of the circle and Douglas or Petrenko would run in from half forward to win the ball which had been smashed forward.
The Crows may be boring to watch at times but their discipline and understanding of their game style is terrific to watch.
Our backline worked reasonably well again and Jamo is rarely beaten. I thought JR was good again and Bower had a fair game.
The main areas to work on for me are our continued slowness of transition. Both offensive and defensive and our propensity to favour the pockets when the corridor is available. Henderson has a real issue with this which amazes me. He has the ability to command the corridor more and he should be instructed to do so. Several times over the past 3 games I've watched, he has lead out wide when there is space available up the middle. Perhaps it's confidence but he should be instructed to control that area of the ground. He showed today against top quality opposition that he has the tools to play that role. His efforts really filled me with confidence today.
Walker tried hard, Yarran showed a real willingness to apply pressure and Eddie was a livewire. He still needs to take responsibility to kick goals when inside 50. Too often he passes off to a low % option when the goal is on.
I thought Robbo was excellent, as was Gibbs.
AJ had a dip but he was too loose on Petrenko.
For the Crows, Dangerfield is great to watch and is almost untackleable. (If that's a word)
Lots of work to do but at least we're trying different structures. I thought the umpiring was OK and it was our lack of discipline that cost us free kicks and 50s. Not poor decisions by the umpires.
