We can go around blaming people for Lance's appointment, the reality is we were in a real predicament. Fevola was our best player in 2006, but obviously his behaviour rendered him ineligible. Kouta had been a great club servant, but was unlikely to play in most games due to recurring injuries (as it is he retired early). While Waite, Simpson or Murphy all have excellent leadership qualities, handing one the captaincy would have placed undue pressure on them and possibly hindered the development and progress and improvement that each have shown this year. So it came down to between Lance and Stevo. Lance had been in good form in 2006, (b n f) and hence was given it. While it obviously looks like a big mistake now, given the circumstances, it arguably was the right decision at the time.
Don't agree Barack.
The choice was easy. It should have been stevo but like all decisions denis made at carlton it turned to dirt.
Yes but I'm just saying that it wasn't just rewarding a member of "old carlton" that Lance was awarded the captaincy. And I have heard people outside this site say that it was the board's decision, and as mentioned earlier more specifically Kernahan's, not Denis's decision, to appoint Lance captain. These people say this is evidenced by the fact that Denis was over-ruled in relation to wanting to pick up Zantuck, and had little decision making authority. But as Stephen M pointed out, these people are in the wrong. This was Denis's decision, as it has been historically, and the board backed him. And what I'm saying is that it wasn't Sticks that decided, Lance is old carlton, the rest aren't, so he should be captain and forced Denis' hand. What I am saying is that there were alot of factors that obviously weighed in, and at the time many believed it was the right decision to appoint Lance captain. Ok, so it was wrong. But since the election in february, almost everything else has gone right in terms of decisions. We have a brilliant CEO, a good football manager who managed to keep Freo's list together, a young and tactically astute coach, sponsorship and revenue deals coming out of everywhere. our coach is picking a youth oriented team, giving Grigg/Hampson/Jackson etc proper runs to prepare for next year. Yes Lance as Captain may have been a mistake, and there are arguments over whose fault it was. But at the end of the day, these mistakes are now the minor minor exception, not the norm. There's no need to go head-hunting. Things are on the up
