Davies was nothing short of ordinary today, and probably shouldn't get another go at it all year with Scotland back next week. Having said that, Davies in the side allowed us to start Walker forward and keep Yarran up front for most of the game. Who else comes in to allow us that luxury? White and Duigan both too slow. Laidler was underdone as it is. O'Keeffe injured, etc. etc. I doubt we played him on merit.

In an ideal world, Simpson is no longer in our best 22. He's gone from being the best run and carry player in the competition to offering very little in that regard, and not quick enough or a good enough kick to get by on other tools. Again, very little else challenging his spot. Curnow, or when eligible to play, Dale. Whilst I think the latter is definitely long term replacement, not just yet.

Our centre bounce structures were ordinary again. You won't see a more dominant non-Sandilands ruck display all for naught as it was today.

Not sure where you go with Bootsma from here.

Im not worried about Bootsma.
But we should bring Watto in next week on Hawkins.

Surely you jest.

Watts would be diabolical on Hawkins.

I keep forgetting we have him on our list.

Watson is zero chance of playing next week

Watson Watts wouldn't make a lot of difference.

Agreed he would make a huge difference in a bad way

Yeah. He only took us from a wooden spoon in his first year to 12th in his fifth year.

Mick took the Pies from 13th in his first year to 13th in his fifth year.

Hmm, what happened in between?

Nothing.
The game is all about winning premierships.

Unless you're St Kilda of course.

Still not many coaches win it in the first season with a new coach.... history says this.
Most coaches need 12 months... thats undisputabe.

Lyon was terrible last year in his first 12 games with Freo.

We will improve too.... relax

You serious? Watch his efforts around packs, his gut busting run and tackle in the last quarter. Kreuzer busts his arse for us, the rest should follow his lead.

Easy to say, but do we always go all out with our smothering attempts? Thought there were a few good ones today though.

Collingwood got the better of us once Kreuzer was rested in the forward line during that final quarter. Was fantastic today I thought.

Great positive for us today was contested marking which we have been terrible at for years.

Yep.

BT and the gang going ape sh1t over Big Boy McEvoy dropping back and taking kick behind the play marks like Gary Dempsey 40 years ago, meanwhile Kreuz is busting his freckle making hits, roving below his knees, tackling, linking and providing options.

Let me get this straight BV..... Are you saying Ratten was a good coach???.... or a better coaching option than Malthouse???

No. I havent said anywhere Ratten was a good coach. He had major deficiencies but they werent evident at the time because our pathetic board appointed him without a comprehensive process. Looking after a mate.

Fast forward 6 years and the same flower are making the same stupid decisions.
By all means appoint Malthouse but do it after interviewing all the available candidates and choosing the best one.
Their next mistake is to give him total control over the football department. How can we spend in excess of $2m to change coaching groups and end up with a midfield coach who hasnt been involved in the AFL for a decade?
Do these flower leave their brains in a jar when they come to work?

2 million dollars of our money pissed up against the wall and a sub standard coaching group to show for it.
Port Adelaide must have been rubbing their hands together to get Alan Richardson and what's more, we're paying his wages for them.
Sorry mate but this is 2003 all over again IMO. Desperate fools have sold the farm to protect their own arses and you know who's copping it in the neck?
Us. The members who are gullible enough to keep putting our hands in our pockets to fund this train wreck.

Good first post GHF and welcome.

Absolutely gutted, but have held off on my thoughts until I calmed down a little.

We had our chances, but we hardly ever win the close ones, and one needs to ask why. Not enough steel, mental toughness and composure when it counted. The game was all set up for a win with Jolly down early and we should have had it iced by 3/4 time.

There were three players in our side today who just aren't anywhere near AFL standard at present and that's too many to carry.

Both games so far in with a big chance and not disgraced. Better today than last week.

Could easily have been 2:0 but we're 0:2.

Wish football didn't upset me so much.....

We have alot of dishonesty amongst our players ... watch at the stoppages ... most times we get first touch, but we get the fumbles and lose possession ... why ??? ... because the player with that first touch has no confidence that his team mates will block/shepherd/protect ... why ??? ... because that player with that first touch doesn't block/shepherd/protect when it is his turn to do so. It starts with you CAPTAIN.

The key component of any strong team unit is going about your job KNOWING every one else is doing their's.

We have some very good INDVIDUAL players but we are far from a unit.

Also in todays game we virtually had no link between our midfield and defence both in an attacking sense and a defensive one.

Collingwood's forwards thrusts were a combination of their defence linking up with their midfield ... their attacks looked more menacing ... they had numbers behind their forward thrusts.

And finally we had some shocking match ups ... Elliot was involved in 14 score involvements.

Two questions. Does anyone here think we improved in any facet of our play from last week?

Does anyone think we performed worse in any areas today than last week. I am talking about the way we played not the personel available.

Far too many passengers in the team today. Our good players gave us a chance but in the end needed more from Casboult, Laidler, Bootsma, Touhy, Armfield, Davies, Carazzo and Mclean.

I wish i could watch Malthouse lose without having to watch Carlton lose at the same time.
