Stevens would be a stop gap.
If he was still at Port or a top rung club he wouldn't even be on the 2nd line of betting for captaincy.
It's great that the young midfielders look up to him, but that's more an indictment on the lack of other options than merit.
Why do people think Stevens is such an obvious choice? For mine he'd be another captain, like whitnall, filling in time until Murphy or Gibbs is seen as 'ready'. We don't even know how he's going to recover from his major surgery, and the pressure of captaincy almost forcing him into playing (as has been the case with Lance this year if we're to believe reports about his knee) isn't going to help us.
That being the case, flowering bite the bullet and just hand it to Murph on a platter next year. He's shown that he mentally strong, loves the club, and I think it will lift his game rather than stifle it. Only one way to find out. It shows that the club believes in the kids taking the club forward on the field.
People said the same about Richie Vandenberg and look what his club is achieving.
You're kidding aren't you? Hawthorn have leaders in many areas on the field. Hodge, Crawford, Joel Smith...
Not because they have Vandenburg sitting in the clubrooms, as good for team spirit as he may be.
We have neither.
If you reckon the hawks will stick with Vandenburg next year over Hodge then I'd love to get some of that stuff...
All I'm questioning is why so many people reckon Stevens is the obvious choice for captain... I don't reckon he is and I can't see the point in appointing him for a couple of years while we wait for Murph to 'be ready'.
