SOS was informed during the board meeting, via telephone, that the board would appoint him assistant to Denis and after 1 year SOS would be installed as coach.
All voted on this and it was passed. SOS understood this to be the deal.
Meeting adjourned.
Smorgan stood on the steps and announced to the media that Denis had the support of the board for the next 2 years.
This was contrary to the vote and the agreement that had been reached.
SOS couldn’t believe what Smorgan said. It was contrary to the deal.
On Thursday SOS told the club that he would not join the club as they had now reneged on the deal.
Ockham: is there any chance that this was a misunderstanding between the board and Silvagni? A simple miscommunication?
Perhaps what was aired for public consumption ('Pagan has the backing of the board for two years' etc) intentionally differed from the backroom deal, the proposition put to Silvagni - only SOS misunderstand the lay of the land. Quite obviously, if this were the case, someone is at fault for poor communication, but that shouldn't be a deal breaker.
Something still doesn't add up. It seems a bit over the top for Stephen to react in this way. To perhaps over-simplify things, if the mooted prospect of an additional 12 months of 'coaching education' was enough to prompt Silvagni to withdraw his offer and turn his back on the club, then perhaps he's not the man for us after all. Perhaps everyone needs to cool down, regroup and reconsider.
Frankly, we can't be certain Silvagni would be ready for a senior coaching job in 12 months time anyway (how could we know at this point?), so any offer along those lines is horribly irresponsible in any case.
The current board are indeed a rabble, whichever spin you put on things.
