Explain, in excruciating detail, how that plan improves the overall quality of the list for 2018.
What are our trade options in 2016? 2017?
As I see it, we have 13 players who would genuinely command a first or second round draft choice right now, and they are:
Menzel, Murphy, Gibbs, Tuohy, Byrne, Casboult, Everitt, Bell, Henderson, Yarran, Docherty, Cripps, Kreuzer
In addition to this I believe we have 9 players who are either of senior quality to support the side during the rebuild that would be undervalued in a trade, or that will come to be of value in a trade in time (i.e. developing youngsters), these are:
Simpson, Walker, Buckley, Boekhorst, Thomas, Jamison, Graham, Jaksch, Sheehan
If we're very lucky, 50% of the following names (though more likely 25%) will have some value at the trade table prior to 2018-2019:
Giles, Holman, Viojo-Rainbow, Smith, Foster, Gowers, Walsh, Fields
Let's say 75% of the 'future stars' make it, that gives us 6 more players of value if we're being realistic. Tack on first and second draft choices for 2016 & 2017, maybe give Rice or Silvagni one chance to be on this list between them and you're looking at another 5 players in the future before trades and free agency.
That's 26 bargaining chips over 3 off-seasons, unless we hit the lottery, and you seem keen to shove up to 6 of them out the door this off-season. Sounds like a small number I know, except that we spend these same chips trying to win games.
So we barely field a quality team. Yeah we might swing some free agency moves and maybe get a little bit out of a 2 for 1 and picks back trade here and there but you are repeatedly and genuinely advocating haemorrhaging a weak list to give it a more positive glow while still maintaining the status quo that gave us a shit list in the first place.
We are under no obligation to trade Yarran and Menzel, and given the suitors and the picks being bandied about, we'd be downright stupid to consider it.
Kreuzer, Bell and Henderson offer more value in terms of pick vs output, but I maintain Kreuzer is worth retaining because he will be there in 2018 and he may even accelerate our progress. He needs a partner in crime though, which is why we need to clear out Wood, Warnock and develop, while maybe picking up a Jamar for 1 season and crossing our fingers with Korchek.
