I think 40 - 45 000 members for a club like ours is a disgrace.
We should have 70 000.
I don't know why people spend time barraking for the Blues without actually supporting them. I know some people really can't afford it but there are plenty who can and don't. I amazes me.
Lets face it for the cost of one good night out you can get a membership.
I buy one and I only ever go to the games if we play in Perth which is one or two at the most.
Carlton would easily have 500 000 barrakers in the country and to have less than 10% sign up is ordinary.
I totally agree. I've been thinking about this myself for a few years.
There is a perception that Carlton is a rich, 'business club', and therefore doesn't need membership revenue in the way North or the Bulldogs do. I know a couple of friends who go to a handful of games per year, but would only take out a membership if it saved them money, not to support the club. Their attitude is 'Carlton has plenty of cash... they don't need my money'. Collingwood is the richest club in the league yet has successfully marketed itself as 'the peoples club'!!... very smart... we need to do the same.
Also, take a look at the membership websites of Collingwood and Hawthorn.... so much better than ours. Much clearer, better designed, more engaging. Before I joined the Captains Club I had no idea that it gave you special access to entertainment in the social club room, buffet lunch and outdoor deck overlooking the docklands, as well as a good ground level seats in the forward pocket. I had no idea I could buy guest passes to each game so I could take friends and family without having to book seats. The information just wasn't presented in a way that was clear and understandable. You can't even sign up for the social club online, you have to call the club!
My point is that membership options should be presented in a clear and attractive way... easy to understand and with pictures and case studies. Make it glossy and attractive.... then market it using social networking, billboards and TV ads. Have incentives, competitions and online games... create hype... make it attractive.
I reckon we'd probably have the lowest ratio of members to supporter in the AFL which is a real shame and needs to be addressed.
