Carlton small forward Talor Byrne will debut in Sunday's clash against Melbourne. Last year's No.45 pick earns his chance after impressing across pre-season, including a three-goal quarter against Brisbane.

Except for as long as I can remember, under all our recent coaches, we've somehow managed to maintain a clogged up forwadline while our opponents invariably maintain an open forward line!

@AFLcomau

Presumably at the expense of Fogarty? And perhaps it means Evans isn’t quite ready to return?

Jack Gunston is averaging half as many offensive 1v1 contests as Harry this year so we're obviously offering more opportunities than some think.
He's also averaging 13.7 pressure acts per game. Harry averages 7. He has a 44.4 winning percentage of his one on one contests. Harry wins 1 in 4. Be careful what you wish for.
No doubt Harry has an enormous athletic advantage over Gunston. Height, muscle, pace etc etc etc. But he's showing none of it at the moment. Lets hope this week is the start of something half decent.

Is this what you are referring to?

If so:
1. Gunston is able to play this role, because he is both competitive defensively and offensively.
2. He is also wining more than 25% of his 1 on 1s unlike Harry, as per BV comment.
3. And he is in a team that has a fast transitioning midfield that can hit targets in the F50.
4. Plus, he's not exactly being left 'in the square all by himself' according to this footage.

Unfortunately this isn't a case of comparing apples with apples just to blame coaching.
Gunston has been around for as long as he has because he's an extremely smart 3 x premiership, 2 x AA footballer.

And Simpson is the one making these observations as well as mentoring Voss, so I am pretty sure our coaching department is all over this.
To think otherwise is being a bit presumptuous IMO.

You can have the best game plans in place, but if your players can't deliver them, then they don't mean jack.
Our players have a lot of work to do, we have all seen the poor disposals, fumbling and dropped tackles.
Let's not gloss over the basics that are not being completed.
Harry is as much to blame as others.
e.g. He's had 11 turnovers out of 25 possessions so far this year.

I hope he steps it up a level this weekend, we really need it.
Actually, we need them all to step it up, especially in Max's milestone game, Max is going to go off.

I like the fact that we have added some speed and goal scoring.
Not too sure about Acres though, he adds nothing IMO, but I am willing to be swayed.

I would've like to have seen Derksen add though.

Odd that they are bringing Tom in for his 250th to share with Max.
You think they'd split it up over 2 weeks.

Edit: I just seen they have the Suns next week, so this would most likely be the better chance for a win for both of them on their 250th.

I’m surprised Haynes & Saad aren’t in the extended squad - unless they have had injury setbacks? I feel like another experienced head or two in defence wouldn’t have gone astray.

Our VFL team could potentially have Saad, Haynes & Newman in the backline this weekend - is that about 600 AFL games of experience?

Expect 1 forced change only.

Voss said on Radio the other day that they will not be bringing back any of the Senior players due to the team having a Bye and also the VFL team seeing no action. He specifically mentioned Cerra & Saad and said they are definately not playing. I guess same logic for Newman & Haynes.

I just don't see the Logic in that. Your Career is on the line... Play your best team. They are experienced bodies, they don't need a run via the VFL to be selected. You keep rewarding Poor performances.

We are technically 1 midfielder down. I don't even think Acres will play.

This can only mean one thing: The SAME BS we been seeing for 2 years. ( Solid First half- well in the game) and a complete Fade out in the 2nd. Demons to run away with it.

Actually, I’m happy with the side. Acres, Fogarty, Evans to miss out.

Williams and Elijah to play high half forward / midfield. Williams up forward will be crucial.
Young, Dean and Weitering to play KB with Boyd, Florent, Cowan.
Carroll, OHollands to play wing / half back/forward and Chesser the main wing.
McGovern, Kemp and Harry up forward with HoK rotating ruck and forward.
Ainsworth, Byrne and Haywood the stay home fowards.
Hewett and Cripps off the bench only and Walsh, Smith to do most of the work through the middle.

First time - I’m ok with this for a while. We seem to have some more run and carry with Boyd and Byrne for Fog and Lord.
Now let’s use the rotations and structure up correctly.

Yeah, when the primary concern with our team is second half fade outs, I feel like bringing back three underdone and/or potentially not-quite-ready-after-hamstring players is kinda asking for trouble.

Really? You'd rather the coach rush back senior players because his career is on the line?
Nah, I suspect you'd be bagging Voss for being selfish and thinking of himself and not the long term future of the club. Rushing players back from injury and risking re-injury would be stupid. Good on the coaches for doing the right thing.
Call it for what it is. You'd bag him no matter what.
