The September Blueprint in The Age by John Pierik

Quote:
Contested possessions on average have increased in all bar three finals campaigns since 2005, while the average number of stoppages typically increases markedly. There were almost 12 more stoppages per game in last year’s finals series compared to the home-and-away campaign. Although that was nothing like the 2017 finals when there was an average of 23 more stoppages per game, the September in which Richmond’s territory-based game plan and pressure at the contest played a role in such a major uptick en route to ending a 37-year premiership drought.
That contested possessions and stoppages increase highlights how much more physical contests can be.
That pressure around the ball correlates with an increase in tackles in all but four finals campaigns since 2005, while this could also explain, in part, why the number of free kicks typically have risen, although this hasn’t been the case in three of the past four seasons.

Quote:
“You have got to win contest, and it’s real territory based, lots more contest to contest to contest,” McRae said.
“Teams that play uncontested [football] tend to get to finals, then it’s hard to be that team. Those sort of things get taken away from you quickly. You have got to be tough to win finals, and you have got to have players that step up.

Says to me the team that reflects the blueprint for success this year is the Carlton Brand.

If we bring the heat every week, we win the flag.

Along the way, TDK, jumps on board, maybe Cerra, Doc, Martin alternate weeks, to make it work.

We will have the numbers back for the 2024 campaign. One week at a time.

“There are usually less marks, there is usually more pressure, there are usually more mistakes, particularly unforced ones. We have tried to create a game style that will stand up.”
Those mistakes Mitchell alludes to give opponents the chance to score off turnover, which is crucial, for 18 of the past 19 premiership teams have ranked top three in this category. Brisbane Lions, Carlton, Sydney, Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn rank top five in this sphere this season.
An increase in the number of inside 50s can be attributed to the typically heightened midfield skill and depth levels of the finalists, despite the increased number of stoppages and overall pressure, but one reason for the decrease in scoring is that the majority of the best eight teams boast blue-chip defenders and tight defensive set-ups.

same article in The Age....

We have the blue chip midfield group to see through the journey.

Apart from the obvious Blue Chip Midfield Brigade of Cripps Hewett Walsh, we have Kennedy, Hollands, Cerra, Williams and Cincotta who can go through there. We can depend on Lord too. Doc may surprise.

Its all happening.

4 weekends babeeee.

Win against eagles, north and port and we’ll be right back in contention…..to be a middle of the road club.

Then from there we can do something about being greater than middle of the road? I like it.

We have definitely made headlines with our fade outs in all 6 games we've played this year.
We started the year with 13 out injured.
Injury continued to hamper us till last week against the Pies when we had 3 out, and technically 5 out with Derksen and Reidy not playing.
We had that game vs Pies, but had a lot going against is in the last losing Harry to concussion and Gov for the last 9 minutes, and one down with Elijah, not to mention our achilles foot with set shots at goal missed...7 of them.

So, after 6 games we are 5 losses and 1 win.

We need 11 wins and 6 losses to get us to 10th on ladder and Finals. Last 9 games are at home in Melbourne.

Will we turn this trend around and win games we've set up for a win, or should we tank to get us Pick 1 (best in the land), plus Walker (FS), by ending up bottom of ladder, below Richmond, WCE, Effendopes, North and STK?

Only 1 game separates Carlton and bottom of ladder Richmond. We play them again, along with Effendopes, and WCE. I don't see the point in ending 17th or 16th because Tigers will call out Walker, effectively sucking up a first rounder and pushing back Sydney's first round pick in the 20's.

Play to Win

Freo (WA) W World agaonst us
STK (Marvel) W Pitto back vs TDK
Bris (Bris)
WB (Marvel) W Injury may help us
Port (Adel) W
Geel (MCG)
Effen (MCG) W
GWS (Syd)

WCE (home) W
Rich (MCG) W
Haw (MCG)
Coll (MCG) W
GCS (Marvel) home game so maybe....
Bris (Marvel) home game, if Bris off the boil in 26
STK (Marvel) W
WB (Marvel)
Freo Marvel) W

Shit, that's only 10 wins... :sly: one short of 12 to make 10th...unless its only 11 wins we need, like it was in 2022 and 2023
