Mitch Cleary hasn’t done himself any favours, but if he hasn’t started to increase his training load, I would say that surgery is imminent.
Now, that could be:
- surgery right away with a view to return later in the year.
- surgery right away ending his season.
- surgery at the end of the season (i.e. maintain enough to take 9-10 weeks of jabs).
Either way, we’re at the global search stage & it all comes out of the soft cap - or Sam’s sky rocket.
All possibilities, but you can breathe easily given he trained with the rehab group yesterday. Sam Walsh was interviewed by Ch 7 and told them he's hoping to play in 2 weeks. Furthermore, Vossy said no surgery required.

“He’s progressing really where we need him to. I know there’s been a bit of commentary in the last 24 hours, but he’s hitting all the markers he needs to, progressing well,” Lloyd told SEN’s Sportsday.
“We’ve said all the way through that we’d wait until the bye (Round 2). Because of the nature of the injury, we just don’t want to give that running commentary and have to make adjustments publicly every week.
“He’s tracking well. We’re happy with how he’s progressing and hitting all the markers he needs to.
“We’ll regroup over the bye and start setting some timelines for him, but for the Carlton supporters out there, we’re really comfortable with where it sits.”

“I had a training session with the boys in rehab (on Thursday), so felt half-productive about my day today, which was nice,” Walsh told 7AFL after the game.
“Hopefully (I’m back) within the next couple of weeks. It’s tracking well. These things you’ve got to build up.
“The boys are holding it down pretty nicely at the moment, which is good.”
Carltonians can relax.
