Icke has been gone for a while now - not even a hint or an announcement about the process/timing that club is going to undertake to find and recruit a replacement. :?

What are ya talkin' about Agro? There's a very very stringent process in place which is visible, transparent, and accountable. I happen to have seen it. Here's a glimpse:

1. Write down the names of all the 1995 premiership players.
2. Take out Sticks and Ratten, who are already there.
3. Take out SOS who's elsewhere.
4. Take out anyone with any real credentials for the role.
5. Put the 3 remaining names - Pearce, Campo, and Whitehead - in a hat.
6. Shake hat vigorously.
7. Draw a name.

It seems to work well.....

8. Maybe revise option 3 ?

Think Moshe might be onto something. And after trade week you really don't want your coach speculating to the press who might or might not be delisted http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/ ... fault.aspx That usually means that both will walk. I would have thought that if WCE are trading for Josh Hill and Freeo have lost Hayden and Grover both might be interested in Bower for nothing. Also not sure why Ratts would come out and say we were going to aggressively pursue a gun forward only to have Swann tell him we actually weren't. One wonders whether the issues with Icke go back to the McLean trade and the possibility that Ratts and Riley presented him with a fate accompli. Remember that trade was basically announced prior to trade week only to have Swann have to come out and say we would look for some renegotiation of the deal during that trade week - (having got a deal from heaven the Dees certainly weren't going to change it). Ratts has done well and was honest in his self assessment this year and in giving Richardson lots of power particularly on match day but sometimes you wonder which cereal packet he got his interpersonal skills from. He said this year that the players through the Leading Teams process told him he should show some interest in them as people. What people manager needs a consultant to tell them that?

Anyway the Icke thing happened at a bad time and we need a replacement, preferably one with experience that extends beyond once being a team mate of Ratts and Sticks. And Ratts needs to be told when and how to make public statements and when not to. I think there are people he has a natural rapport with and others he doesn't. And I am not sure he has the natural people skills to make everyone feel that they are equal. Ratts has done well but is not the full package, we need to ensure he has people around him to fill in the gaps, one of these needs to be a good team and list manager who is adept at handling the press and the players, don't want Swann to have to keep jumping in to re-explain things.

Well apparently you dont need a Football Manager DURING trade week because all his work should have been done PRIOR to trade week.

This talk reminds me of last years TC meltdown over assistants. Funny stuff.

All the assumptions being made about the Brock trade are funny also. Everyone is guessing.

Coaches and list managers not seeing eye to eye would be something that goes on at all clubs. Its only natural when you think about it.

I reckon we went overboard on the talls last year in the draft and i dont think Ratts was that keen on that strategy. The year before id say Icke would have taken Talia ahead of Lucas too. Id say that is where the trouble started.
I am guessing though.

I was at the cancelled intra club game a couple of years back and Icke was trying to get Ratts to come out and talk to people who turned up to watch the game. Ratts wasnt that keen on the idea though. Looked like a bit of tension there between the two.

Could Riley be the man to take Ickes job?

I am not sure of the demarkation, I would have thought that the Icke position would be involved in contracts and player trades, not in drafting. I thought Hughes basically looked after that. Presumably he discusses with the MC but he and his men are the ones who are experts on this. The McLean deal was a botched job, not just in the fact that Brock can't get a game and is on big dough but that a day or two after it was announced, Icke was suggesting renegotiating it. That means someone has stuffed up.

MELBOURNE expects the Brock McLean-for-pick 11 deal to be one of the first completed during this week's trading, despite a late suggestion by Carlton that it would seek an added exchange of picks for the onballer.

Club chief executives, Cameron Schwab and Greg Swann shook hands on it two weeks ago.

On Thursday, Carlton football manager Steven Icke suggested that while the in-principle agreement was enough to get the deal done, the Blues might seek icing on the cake.

It is believed Carlton will try to trade second round draft picks with the Demons, to move up the order, but Melbourne, having had its initial suggestion of McLean and pick 34 for picks 11 and 27 knocked back, will not allow that to happen.

I thought part of Ickes role was to report back independently to the committee on footy matters so Riley would be the wrong man coming from the MC and being Ratts right hand man. We need an independent person appointed by the committee who can deal with the footy dept while not being a subordinate in the footy dept.

Apart from the Williams signing, it's been a pretty ordinary month for the FD since the loss at Subi. Need to get their act together !

What did you want to happen ?

You have seen everything unfold, who did you want in and who did you want out?

Not everyone on the same page (leading to Icke departure) and mixed messages (Swann/Ratts) re the structure of the list suggests confusion in the ranks. Also, failure to utilize the trade period to improve our position (players/DP picks) and that leads me to thinking that it's been an ordinary month for the FD.

Rexy, we touched on this yesterday, but I'm genuinely curious about what you'd have like to see happen during trade week.

Could you list 5 deals you think could have been pursued? Realistic and taking into account the needs of the other team. Doesn't need to be inclusive so players or picks can be involved in different deals.

There's no malice in my question Rexy, I really am just curious what you'd have liked to see.

Clearly you haven't moved on because you're still going on about how bad our week was

No more sneaky leakers at Carlton.

The initial rumour of Rod Austin - threw everyone off the scent.

If "The Vet" shows the same steely determination and resolve in this role that he showed on the field then we are in great hands - wonderful appointment.

At least he doesnt have to take shots on goal with this appointment - and no more photos of him sticking his arm up a cow's clacker either.
