Now that the Troy Broadbridge memorial match is over, and the Bombers lost it badly, you'd think we would beat them on Friday night...

Your comments are invited....

This is sounding like being another "how much will we thrash the Roos by" thread.

No way Im saying that we will thrash the Bombers, but instead of wallowing in the dissappiontment of this weeks defeat, I thought it better to focus on how we are to defeat Essendon*. Move on to next week...

At least try and feel better by looking at ways in which we can get out first win on the board for 2005...or do we wish to languish in this weeks loss some more...

Lucas is a bit of a worry now with the injuries.
But hopefully today was a good kick in the arse for the boys.

Today we played poorly...didn't man up well, had an ineffective fwd line, our top players were well below par.... and we lost by 3 goals. We'll come out firing on Friday.

I was counting on a win today and I am really dissappointed that we lost. But we need to be positiive and look at how we can win next week.

Came back to earth pretty hard after the wizzer cup final, but we need to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and get back in the saddle.

As Denis said, the biceps havent shrunk over a couple of weeks, its all in the head. Thats what we need to get right.

Essendon* were ordinary without Llyod to look for. Toss up next week with us missing Livo and T-Bird. If Stevens and campo put yesterday behind them and provide midfield options we should win by three to four goals.

A look back at last year's results shows how illusory first-round scorelines can be, but it looks like it could be a long, hard winter for Sheedy's men.

While yesterdays loss was disappointing, the thing this football team proved to us last year is that they have the ability and desire to bounce back after a loss.

The injuries have left the door ajar for Karl and Setanta, and given how poorly we played yesterday we still only got done by 3 goals.

Onward and upward.

Bombers needed 2 Hirds last night. One to play in the middle to get the ball and kick it to the one playing in the goal square. They couldn't have it both ways. With Hird in the middle there was no-one to catch it up forward except Lucas. When Hird went forward the Bombers couldn't get it to him.

Karl matches up well on Lucas and should get the job.

If Laycock comes in it will really stretch us down back and I guess Digby will get the job. Deluca struggled to be physical enought to play down back. Teague/Dean 'the sniper' Solomon should be a real prospect.

Jason Johnson looked sadly underdone and Peverill is solid at best. McPhee is a danger and I suspect Sporn/Hird and Banno/McPhee.

IMHO if the calibre of our on-ballers can't beat the Bomber group easily then I would suggest we are no-more advanced than 6 months ago.

Regards Cazzesman

We really need to beat a Lloyd-less Essendon* or we'll be showing little improvement from last year.

Norman to take Lucas.
Morell to take one of Laycock or Hille.
Arche/Barnie vs Allan.
Banno on McPhee.
Sporn on Hird.

CM is right.
Our midfield has to fire or we will be killed on Friday night.
There is something about us against Essendon* on a Friday night.
No matter what the circumstances are, we always seem to fire up against them.
Being the type of player that Stevens is, I doubt he would let himself play two bad games in a row.

If Kouta can play like he did yesterday, Stevens and Campo to get back to their best, we should win.

I also believe we should bring in as much pace as we can.
Chambers, if right, should come in for Walker.
Norman to replace Livo.
I'd put Simmo in ahead of Davies.
The Bombers aren't fast and we should beat them in the pace department.

And all of a sudden, Laidley has worked out how to stop Lance and Fev which pretty much stops Carlton.
Throw 2-3 players in the path of either of them and we are basically stuffed.
If Sheedy were to use this tactic on Friday night, and Sheedy being Sheedy I think he will, either Betts or Simmo should be rotating through the bench and forward pocket to crumb at either Lance or Fev's feet.
As I said in the Eddie Betts thread, the amount of times the ball fell in front of a Lance or Fev pack was unbelievable and Eddie really could have had a field day with it.
Both Simmo and Eddie are pacy skilled blokes and would fill the role perfectly.

I thought we played at about 60% of our potential yesterday. Karl in for Livo is not a bad swap. Agree re comments about our mid field needing to lift. It is rare for Stevens to play two poor games in a row and I have no doubt Campo will lift as well.

Would not under estimate Essendon* but I reckon Dennis will have the boys mind on the job on Friday night.

can I just say on Davies he missed two he should have kicked, he was not one of our worst.

Yeah fair enough.
Probably a bit harsh on him.

Would you leave it at Norman and Chambers in for Livo and Walker?
Or would you go a step further and include Simmo for either Davies or Carrots?

I thought Davies was ok, at least he had 4 shots at goal which means he's doing something right. Yes he missed a few he should have kicked but we've seen him kick important goals in the past which have just about won us the game. Wasn't our worst player.

Karl will have to come in, Setanta still seems unlikely to me. You'd also have to say that Chambers would be unlikely to return if indeed he has torn his calf?

Fair point, but realistically, at least 2 of those shots were very very gettable, especially for a professional footballer. His finishing was as poor as the whole team's yesterday, which doesn't make him the worst offender, but I guess as they were shots on goal, just more visible.
