IMHO, 2, 4, 25 should be 'retired'

I'm not a fan of retiring numbers. After a while if you have too many club legends you end up with hardly any sensible numbers to choose from. You may want a 69 at back pocket but I'm a family man!

Well I covered a bunch of premierships with my nominations btw, that should qualify.

Call me old but most numbers still take me back to the 70s, 80s.

So...
best highest number so far?

Would nominating Harry Madden at 44 cover it?

p.s.
would love to see 69 win a Brownlow!
Make for great red-carpet viewing...

That’s a big call to give Cowan no 2!

It's an interesting debate. I've gone back and forth over the years, but probably now sit in the 'no' camp re: retiring jumper numbers.

I like the fact that each player has a chance to make their own history from the number on their back - and even endeavour to reach the heights more synonymous with players who adourned that number in the past.

As far as traditions go, names on the locker shits all over banners in the rafters.

If I recall correctly, they gave Clem Smith #25.

I don't think they put a lot of time into it. I imagine the conversation between Carlton official and player at the start of 1992 went something like this:

"Rohan Welsh - welcome to the club mate! Won the 1991 VFL goalkicking with 84...mate - that's fantastic! Number 38 for you Woosher"

"Mark Athorn - welcome to the club mate! 17 games for the Dogs, 21 for Fitzroy and 15 for the Swans...woah, fourth club in four years! Mark, that's some journey! You know another young man who played for Carlton had a long journey when he came to Australia as a 4 year old boy direct from war-torn Europe...what was his name...argh - tip of my tongue. Anyway, I digress - journeys Mark...don't stop believin'. Number 25 for you"

Does Hollands know how good Rod Ashman was ? absolute honour to be given that number and he gives it the lemonade and sarse . Disrespectful . The kid needs a history lesson or maybe the blokes issuing numbers need a history lesson . Rod Ashman is a former player who is revered in my eyes .

Mate , he didn't say anything . Hollands was personally presented with his number 14 jumper by the great Rod Ashman himself . And now 12 months later he gets the number 4 jumper . Not blaming Hollands himself but that is a faaarkin weird move of the highest order . Thats looney tunes sort of stuff for mine .

If I could be bothered, I would start a new thread where we could go through each number and list the best and worst player.
Eg #2 J Nicholls , T Menzel
#25 Jezza, Clem Smith etc
This could keep us busy over Summer. :garthp:
Go Blues!

Well , i reckon i could give you not the best or worst No 14 but the unluckiest and that would be Brad Fisher stranded on 99 games .

Maybe it was less a snub to Ashman & more a nod to Sticks, given Hollands age?

(I loved Ashy btw. Still remember him kicking a 60m torpedo goal to the Lygon St end, against Essendon* in 85)

Sticks had been retired 7 years when Ollie was born so maybe more of a nod to Gibbs perhaps? Ollie's dad was picked up in the rookie draft of 1998, the year after Sticks had retired! Ollie's grandpa is probably older than Sticks.
