I always see a lot of speculation around what would have happened if the details of the actual trade had been different (i.e. we sent pick 1 instead of Kennedy), but never any real thought into what would have happened had Judd turned around and nominated one of Essendon*/Melbourne/Collingwood instead.

- That's a huge amount of money left in the salary cap, who do we make a play for instead? There were no other big moves that year, who might have been shook loose?
- Who do we use pick 3 on? History shows 4/5 picks being WA kids (Masten, Morton, Myers, Palmer) and Jarrad Grant. Does Lachie Henderson come to us a few years earlier?
- Who becomes captain instead? Does Lance get another year as a result?
- Does Fev end up staying longer? How does the Fevola/Kennedy tandem work?
- Do we end up being a better club in the long run without him?

We will never know the answer to this question as Kennedy was a gun.

However what i do know is it felt good to hear the contending teams were being knocked out and how good that felt. First Melbourne a team he followed as kid and then Collingwood conceded and said it was Carlton. Then it was confirmed. Felt so proud of the club for convincing him to come and Judd for choosing us.

He gave the club and fans hope and excitement. We played in a couple of finals.

Then reality hit that he wasnt going to be the savour.

But boy it was great watching him. And now he is 50% a Carlton person for life.

If his kids play for us & are guns, then we'll know we made the right call

I am of the firm belief that our system was so broken, so bereft of any development talent, that had we kept JK he'd have been delisted within 2 years and we'd never have been able to attract talent, young of old, for even longer than worked out.

Judd did lift standards, and Judd did win us games. Jud was not the charismatic off field guy that was going to bring people back win or lose, but on field he always did his job.

What I'd have changed would be pick 1. I'd have given that pick up (sorry Kruze) and held onto Kennedy, assuming that was possible.

I think we did the right thing.

Plus, think of all the kids that are now into cardboard recycling who may have been lost to the joys of separating your garbage otherwise.

Besides, we were always going to recruit Judd.

I still maintain after all these years we should have played harder ball with West Coast on the trade and that adding a player to the deal (Josh Kennedy) should never have happened.

Pick 3 and 20 - should have been enough, don’t think that Geelong got too much more than that for Gary Ablett Jr, when he went to Gold Coast.

Pretty much this as that's the only thing that will ever convince me it was a good idea.

The first Ablett move was the original makey uppy.

Suns we’re paying him something like 25% of the cap ($9m over 5yr), so Jabba gave Geelong two first round picks. Memory is a bit cloudy, but I think they were fixed at 10 or 11 with a five year time frame to cash in.

I think we would have done a three-peat in this parallel universe

I agree.

And don’t underestimate the benefits of eating salad.

It was worth it for trade week 2007 alone, loved it

If it stopped Collingwood from winning one or two flags, it was worth every cent.

Very easy to have a revisionist view on this.

People forget just how much we were on our knees when he came to us - he singlehandedly hauled us off the canvas and we made finals 3 years in a row (before Sticks brought in Malthouse and blew the joint up again).

Yep, no regrets from me, and agree there's no guarantee JK would have become a star at Carlton

We needed Judd at that time both on and off the field.
Sadly, there were a lot of things wrong and Judd on his own couldn’t fix it but I believe that was the turning point for us.
Yes, we’ve had a couple of false starts since then but that is on our other subsequent bad decisions.

It is interesting to note that Collingwood shrugged his snub off and won a flag a few years later. Essendon* has been nowhere since then. Melbourne, a bit like us, have had a few false starts but got there in the end.

PS. I would have loved a different option than trading JK.

Plenty of worse decisions have been made in the past quarter of a century than recruiting Judd.

The real question should be: What happens if we gave them Paul Bower instead of Kennedy?

If we were better at trading, we would have kept Kennedy. Said it at the time, we overpaid, and all this time, nothing has changed. We aren’t very good this. Another example is giving pick 17 to North in the Fisher trade.
