50 POINT WINS IN A ROW

The defeat of Port by 50 points means this team has achieved a feat Unequalled by any other Carlton team including all Premiership ones:
Blues won an unprecedented FIVE games in a row by 50 or more points.

(Our previous best was still a rare 3 x 50 pt wins in a row in 1987 & 2001)

Only one club - Geelong, has strung as many or more 50+ wins in a row together...
5 in 2008, 6 in 1989

BEST DEFENCE IN 50 YEARS

Blues averaged just 73.8 pts 'against'.

NO previous Carlton team has had such a low 'against' average since the 1968 flag winning one.
(excluding the covid affected 2020 season when games were shortened)

That's right - not even the 7 subsequent Premiership teams have kept their opposition to this low number.
Only two Carlton Premiership teams in 100 years have had a lower avg. Against score '47, '68

Carlton had 3 x 100+ against scores this year.
Only one Blues team in 50 years has had less - last year's team had only one.

STREAKS, SEASON COMEBACKS, UPSETS

No team that has lost 6 in a row has then won 9 straight.

No team that has lost 6 in a row has finished as high as 5th as Blues did this year.

No team that has lost 6 in a row has then gone on to play in a Preliminary Final.

Only the 3rd time Blues have beaten the Minor Premiers in 30 years.

Only the 3rd time Blues have beaten 3 of the top 4 since the '95 flag.

First time Blues have defeated 6 of 7 other teams in top 8 since 1995.

Only team to defeat the top 2 teams from outside the 8 and then make the finals.

First team to climb 10 ladder positions after the half way mark of the season.

Only team to climb 12 ladder positions in a season after round 7.

Only team to still be in bottom 4 in round 15 and still make a Prelim.

ATTENDANCE RECORDS & FINALS

2nd biggest Elimination Final crowd of all time.

2nd biggest Friday night crowd of all time.

Biggest Semi-Final crowd since 1971.

Only 3 bigger finals crowds at The Gabba.

First Carlton team to win two finals in the same season in 24 years.

Only two other finals with lower opposition scores in 35 years than this year's EF & SF
(PF '95, EF '01)

Only two narrower finals wins than our SF v Melb. in Carlton history

The defeat of West Coast next week by more than 50 points means this team will have achieved a feat unequalled by any other Carlton team including all Premiership ones:
Blues will have won an unprecedented FIVE games in a row by 50 or more points.

I'd be interested to know if achievements such as making the finals have been done by a team which had a six games losing streak

Sydney a few years back when we beat them?

The game where Alex Silvagni gave Franklin a bath.

Thanks for the puzzler Jezzarules.

Here goes:

The 'champion' is Melbourne 2005 with 7 straight losses...
Started rd. 13 in 2nd place then tumbled to 11th before clawing back to 7th with wins in last 3.
Waste of effort, bowed out to Geelong by 55 points in EF.

Honourable mentions with 6 straight losses but still making finals:

2017 Sydney (lost first 6 games, got to 7th, won EF but lost Semi to Geelong)
2010 Hawthorn (lost Rds 2-7, got to 7th but lost EF to Fremantle)
1995 Footscray (lost Rds 6-11, fell to 13th but got back to 7th then lost EF to Geelong)
1974 Footscray (fell from 2nd to 6th but won last 6 in a row to consolidate 5th in the then Final 5, lost EF)

Many have lost 5 straight and made finals.
Best 'recovery' was Melbourne in 1988. Slipped from 2nd to 5th before knocking out Carlton in prelim to make GF.

Carlton's 'best' was 5 straight losses Rds 8-12 1976 dropping from 1st to only 3rd before rebounding to win minor premiership.
Then missing the GF with a soul-shattering loss to North at Arctic Park in the prelim by one point.
(yes, I was there)

Just checked AFL tables and yes, that win made Sydney 0-6 to start 2017.

They ended up finishing 6th, belting Essendon* in the finals (lol) before losing to Geelong in the semis.

I’d be happy just to get five wins in a row.

Staggering.

5 weeks ago, we were staring down the barrel of one of the worst seasons in recent memory. Now, statistically at least, it's going to be one of the best.

One of the best?

How long have you supported Carlton?

Didn't we win the spoon in 2007?

Bitchmond pipped us to the spoon by half a game. But our record that season was W4 L18 so the above stat is incorrect.

Indeed.

'Statistically' speaking this team HAS already done something No premiership side ever did.

The 5 x 50+ pt wins in a row: previous best was only 3 in a row in 1987 & 2001

Only 9 other years has a Carlton side won more games by 50 points than this one and the season is not yet finished...
(just four of those were Premiership years - 79 (8), 82 (7), 87 (8), 95 (7)

And as per the opening post: No Carlton team has had a better defence - measured by 'average points against' - since 1968.

Finally, should we make the finals - doing so after 6 losses in a row will also be a first.

Since that unfortunate string of defeats The Blues are at last developing the ability to dominate other teams in a convincing fashion - a necessary hallmark of Premiership success and a comforting reminder of our glorious heydays.

A first for us? I recall Swans losing the first 6 in 2017 and then won an elimination final

The same trajectory I see us this year
