Was going to ask this in the This is a low thread, but it's its own topic I think.

What can we look back at & learn from other bottom feeder clubs that changed a shitty culture for the better? What did they do? What are the common patterns?

I'll take St Kilda for example, & I absolutely do this through gritted teeth because it was so us that used to hang it on them for being useless.

But in the 70s & 80s, they bloody were! Then...90s St Kilda got better. Finals in 91/92 then pretty close to a flag in 97.

The 2000s, better still. Built a good side & played some absolutely top shelf footy under Thomas then Lyon. How we ourselves would love a 'streak' right now, given we can't even win more than 2 in a row.

So....how? They got draft picks, but it can't be just draft picks. because we got draft picks, & lots of them.

How did clubs like them, Geelong, & Richmond finally grow a pair? What can we learn?

They all showed faith in their young embattled senior coach.

Not bad. St Kilda changed coach a bit though.

Probably the reason why they are where they are.

Brian Cook, Neil Balme (multiple clubs), Mark Williams, A Clarkson, L Matthews, W Lofts, Ross Lyon (StKilda)....need to set the standards and make sure your leaders ensure the playing list follow them.

Once you bring in the wokes and PC very difficult to change back.
Carlton is very good at everything except playing football.
They are all good citizens.

You can't have that in football club.

St.Kilda's culture has never been a great one. A few coaches have been rolled there recently. Ratts is learning it can be a tough place to coach. They have copped terrible, no effort thumpings this year.

Is it a case of chicken and egg?

Win games...and the culture will change?

Or change culture...and the wins will come?

And what does 'club culture' (as opposed to Culture Club) actually mean?

Supporting your teammates through thick and thin, on and off the field?
Not paying overs for players who under-perform?
Actually meaning what you say...'Players will be selected on merit'?
Selecting players who bust a gut, week in, week out, and recognise the importance of strong defensive efforts?
Supporting social causes?
Giving members and supporters what they want (which more than anything else, is winning games)?
Clear, regular and honest communication with members?

I think I’ve posted about this before but one of my former employers brought in Paul Roos to speak to us once.

It was obviously aimed at culture. Interestingly, his points (Football related) were:

- player led culture is critical

- Players need to be shareholders - ask what they want to achieve?

- Leads to agreed behaviours. Live the behaviours, boundaries set by players and coaches.

- Peer assessments and mentoring based on behaviours. Honesty with each other.

- Needs to be a culture of reviewing those behaviours and taking responsibility for taking charge for the review of behaviours

Culture - accepted and expected behaviour - needs to be enforced.

—————-

My take away from this is that accountability is critical; if players are not accountable to each other then nothing will change.

Same goes for coaches. Coach’s integrity is critical. This means consistent criteria for selection and getting dropped too.

No one should be immune from doing the team thing. Being a highly paid superstar does not excuse you from doing the team first stuff.

This is why I’ve been hard on Murphy - not sure whether team first behaviours were readily demonstrated. This filtered through the playing list IMHO. Too many times we saw him call for the ball even though he was in an inferior position.

This is what concerns me about Cripps, it’s creeped into his game a bit. Further, defensive accountability will not change until he goes the same - leaders’ example is followed even if subconsciously.

Weitering and Walsh seem to lead the way in this regard in addition to Ed Curnow. They take responsibility for their actions and know that their teammates look at them.

Same thing for coaches. Players need to know exactly where they stand. If coaches do not enforce standards, how do they expect players to keep them?

Selection integrity has been a source of frustration for supporters and I think players alike. This is critical to culture - it binds players and coaches and the accountability to both; if coaches play favourites then they will be held accountable by the players.

When all is said and done...

Select the right players - physically strong, mentally strong, skillful, hard-working, open-minded and ready to learn, with a team-first attitude. Easier said than done, no doubt.

Have said players work together with an appropriate and possibly flexible game plan in place.

Select a coach and support staff who enable this to happen.

That's about it, I reckon.

And maybe only have ethically responsible corporate partners involved with the Club.

Richmond's mantra is pretty woke & PC though isn't it?

(Admittedly the end result hasn't always been)

The swans culture is all about the bloods and they embraced their history and held themselves Accountable to this ,,,

This is a bare minimum for us and start from there , we have a real chance when the Teague Train ends this week to start afresh and bring in people who understand successful culture

Yeah I know, that's what I meant. PC mantra, varied behaviour

Maybe that's what we should do, model ourselves on the characters I knocked around with at uni. Sell ourselves to the world as model caring sharing golden children, while actually being complete f-wits & narcissists behind the scenes

If Lyon comes in he will bring in some pricks.

But Lyon and Liddle will end in tears

Yep, let's recruit rapists and wife beaters and then we'll finally be good at footy.
