Hello Carlton Fans, Since 2014, we—the students and professors of the Know Rivalry Project—have been studying rivalry for sports in North America with the help of message board members. Now we are expanding our research to the AFL. We also want to start the rivalry conversation here. I grew up with Carlton Collingwood the biggest rivalry in the VFL-AFL. Probably still the country's best known Rivalry/ Blockbuster Biggest crowd at the MCG every time they play(ed), notwithstanding the record 121000 at the 1970 GF. It has to be noted that Carlton sponsored Collingwood to join the VFL in 1896; call them a younger brother. No younger brother after Collingwood beat Carlton and only time in a GF in 1910. The Rest is history. Today its Carlton vs Essendon* as our most hated Rival, given both teams have won the most VFL/AFL Premierships: 16 each. There's a lot of other reasons for the deep hatred of Essendon*, like the Ron Evans assault on the club with his personal vendetta. Richmond - Carlton Rivalry in next/equal Blockbuster Rivalry, but no doubt as strong a Rivalry as Collingwood and Essendon* The rest, well they are practise games. |
