It feels like we got obsessed with trying to build the perfect list, which you can never do. Gut the list, go to the draft with high picks, recruit recycled players who for whatever reason were originally taken as high draft picks. In theory they should all come on together & all blossom at the same time. Water regularly, leave in the sun & voila.

We forgot to build a mentality & a system & a hardness while we were at it. No wonder injuries always absolutely kill us. It's not just list depth we're missing, it's the ability to be a total system where one missing part can be replaced by another that knows its role.

Exactly CK

Start with the low lying fruit. The obvious weaknesses.

Start by dropping Murphy. He has checked out and compromises the standards required. He had lost his sense of space. He is not about to change. His first quarter (and I was seated at ground level for this game) was weak, insipid, conditional and plays with a sense of entitlement. Has since he got smashed by Dangerfield in 2012 ie his last 100 games. Fans were laughing at "the old man". He's embarrassing and coaches selecting him are guilty of setting him up as "laughing stock".

That will be a sign the first step has been taken. Murphy should retire 'hurt'.

Next step is to start selecting AFL players not VFL players or Stawell Gift runners: see yu Cottrell (you have a lot of work to do with your skills and hardness at the contest).

See, 2 just like that. Newnes, Setterfield may have had their 15 disposals but they are ball watchers. Pitto is terrible. I don't care if he tries his best and I know he's the best we've got.

Anyone know WTF was the role Ed Curnow playing?

Out: Murphy (hurt feelings)
In: Hardness

Or he could be an absolute champ & go back & captain the reserves for the rest of the season. Someone in another thread said they recall seeing Jimmy Buckley & Wayne Harmes finish off their careers in the 2s. It's no disgrace if you handle it like a pro.

The rusted on supporters like us would respect both Murphy & the club if they parked him on 295 & had him play for the bigger picture. He could actually make a memorable statement if he did that. Now that the season is shot we need to make spots outside the usual Cottrell-Gibbons-Newnes rotation for Honey Ramsay Kemp etc. And we need to have another decent look at LOB & Willow before we are done, even Kennedy. There is heaps we could be doing with Murph's spot in the team over the next 10 weeks.

That would be great if Murph did do that.
I'm sure he will get 4 more games to reach 300, but for some sanity make them as The Med Sub

I don't see Willo or Kennedy as our future, but why not have one last look. LOB should be given more games, fatten him up for a Trade if we can (or, if not, just delist).
Cottrell Gibbons Newnes: Ive seen enough in 2021.

Ed was playing half back to enable Docherty to play on the wing and Dow to start in the midfield. Unfortunately Plowman out and Williamson failing to play to the level required has left us a defender short.
Ed isn't a defender. He's an accountable mid and probably our only one.

Yes, a utopian vision of how things should be, I don’t think we will try the let’s have a perfect rebuild trick again.

Thing is it’s a tough competition, other sides don’t stand still for us. It’s not like other clubs aren’t all striving to get better while we have been trying to build our list the last 6 years.

There are heaps of stories of failed rebuilds, and forks in the road on the way to getting where you want to be. I think we need to correctly identify where the problems lie.

I’m beginning to think we just have a crappy group of senior players who have been unaccountable for way too long and have no idea what team success looks like.

Not to be utopian, but I actually reckon we're only about three players away from being good. And those three players might already be on the list.

A hard-nosed defender who likes hitting opponents as much as he loves defending. Parks?
A two-way mid with good skills who knows how to defend. Stocker?
A forward who can turn a half-chance into a goal. C. Curnow?

You have a good point BC.
But we still need a coach that has a decent game plan that capitalises on our players strengths and does not expose our weaknesses.
Pretty much the opposite of what we have been seeing.
And also a coach that has got game day tactics and is willing to make changes to send messages to players and possibly win games.
Pretty much something we have not done since Neil Craig was in the box with Bolton.

And a coach who believes in the young players, and trusts them to play in their specialised positions.

I also feel that Teague is all that inspirational as when was the last time they came out at the start or half time super pumped ?

Parks?

Newnes? with Murph as sub

Such lack of creativity by Teague and his merry men. Not saying those moves would have worked but FFS, if Curnow was the only solution those morons had, a review into the coaching dept can't come soon enough
