Carlton has opened up a third pick after Sam Philp's groin injury ruled him out for the year. @AFLcomau

Early draft picks are pointless if you introduce them to a poor losing culture, lack of player and game development.

Fix this and the club wouldn’t so heavily reliant on early draft picks.

Although, I think we do have to go through a mini rebuild and moving some players on would be part of this process

Next year, we will still have a young list.

No need for more developing kids next year. Maybe the year after or after that.

Get some experienced class to replace the retiring oldies Levi, Eddie and Murph; a bonafide MIDFIELDER.

We need depth for cover if Jones or Weiters get injured. I want Ben McKay for fill back and Jones can be depth.

3 players if good will replace Levi, Bettsy and Murph. Will we go for defensive cover, midfield support, or best available developing players?

Then we have 2021 round 1, 2, 3 and 2022 future picks to play with for some stars. I'm sure some of our players will be on the table too.

Still think we need to recruit midfielders.

Can never have enough of them.

Hang on ... didn't we just do that for the last 5 years?

Agree. Sadly.

Could Eddie keep Stengel on the straight and narrow?

Good questions Des, I'd suggest he would be the best skilled player available but his off field demeanour is a concern.

No no no we need more midfielders so we can try them at half back or use them as small forwards coz that's what we do yeah

We just added

Alex Mirkov 210 cm ruckman ... can't beliueve he slipped to us.

Jordan Boyd from the Footscray VFL team. Quick defender. Richmond we going to take him next pick.

Really glad we took a ruckman.
A 210cm giant who can jump and thump and run and tackle.
There's a story his Ivanhoe tells about his ability to catch the small quick guys and tackle them to the ground, and he surprises, its quite funny to watch; he's quick

Panther?

Ex Volleyball player. Played at a high level...boom boom.

i really think we should have looked at a kpd.

if jones or weitering go down, levi is our only back up, and we leak goals as it is

Yep, especially with Marchbank out. Fingers crossed we don’t lose Weitering.

Its a precarious position we are in if one of the only 2 KPD's we have goes down.

Plowman and Marchbank are more 3rd tall and marchy an intercept mark.

The back 6 are good. I think all of them, like other teams have made mistakes, but generally good.

Its the midfield/wings that need to be stronger at defense imo, after all, its their opponents that deliver the ball to their forwards.

I think this is a good place to draft a ruckman. Always a big risk to use a first round pick in the National Draft on ruckmen who take a long time to develop and often outperform at junior level due to their straight height advantage.
And Mirkov fell to us because Moyle fell too, so Gold Coast took him at no.5.

I think this mid-season draft should not be viewed with any expectation - these are mostly speculative players who were not good enough to get drafter at the National Draft, although may have matured into a solid player through VFL or other sub-level leagues since their draft year. OR, for players who are showing promise ahead of their National Draft League - so may be worth the risk but without usual due diligence on their form or character.

We are very unlikely to get a replacement for Liam Jones or the midfield jet who will solve our problems.

I agree totally. Its our biggest weakness and is a recurring issue since Teague has taken over even when we win. That's why I have always felt we are better playing Walsh on a wing although the recent use of Docherty on the wing has helped a bit I feel. But it may be time to bite the bullet and replace Cottrell who while he runs and works hard getting to contests he doesn't impact with possession. This is where the loss of Cunningham and Dows slow development hurts as well as Setterfields drop in form from last year. I also think it worth giving Gibbons more midfield time and see if he really has what it takes at this level.
