Hi folks.Just got back from a funeral. My last serving Uncle.Maurice ( Mick ) Gissane...........an uncle you dreamed of.Caring and interested in everything i and my family did right to the very end...............Why do i follow the Blues ? i will go back to the start. My mum was a dinky di country girl from Bendigo.Dad ? interesting story ! we have all heard of the mass migration to Australia from the UK and Europe post WW2..............but believe it or not there where a few people from Europe prior to WW2.You know, adventura's who threw caution to the wind and set out to find a better life for themselves away from poverty stricken Europe. You guessed it,my dad was one of those.Somehow he found his way to Australia in about 1936.From Kranidi in Greece actually. How did he meet my Mum ? dunno but they got hitched and 5 kids later. So,i am actually the first of those mixed marriages which sorta predated multiculterism..............So,i didn't have a dad who had a footy team let alone having a kick of the footy with dad................and this is where the one eyed Carlton supporting uncle ( he was married to mum's older sister Muriel ) came into the story.By hook or by crook he brainwashed us every chance he got.And it worked ! he got us and another Carlton supporting family was born. All the kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews, yep, you guessed it,Blues fans.Probably be 50 or 60 all up i reckon............

So.........thanks Uncle Mick.......thanks for being a fantastic uncle.........thanks for being a fantastic person who stood beside me and NEVER EVER let me down.............never let any of the family down.............gonna miss you, sorta can't think what life is gonna be without you around...........but as you alway said when someone passed, cry a little bit,but not too much, get up and about and get on with things like a true Carlton supporter should............................

And the biggest thanks i can give is thanks for brainwashing me as a kid in becoming a Carlton supporter. It has given me immeasurable pleasure throughout my life........

The Carlton Football Club............Now Always Forever.

Great post.
RIP...
Raise a glass!

(BTW the pre war migration was about leaving the depression, they arrived here just in time for it to hit Aus... Depression plus being a migrant... and if you were Italian you were probably interned as well... They had a HARD life, we have to remember, these guys (locals and migrants) built a great country - and clearly supported a great team...
Like l said, Raise a glass...

(Zoi se mas - sorry mods)

Reminds me a little of my uncle. He never married, his heart was broken when he received a "dear John" letter while he was over seas in the RAAF during WW2. He was a fanatical Carlton supporter all his life and made sure I would be the same. I've still got a moth eaten CFC jumper that he bought me when I was a little tacker. He thought the world of our daughter, and would have been so happy if he'd lived long enough to see her settle down with a guy from a similarly fanatical Carlton family.

I was so glad when we won the 1995 flag as I knew his time was running out. I rang him up as soon as the game was over "Jack Elliott speaking" says he! He died in 1998 at 80, I remember talking footy with him when he was literally on his death bed. I've got a sign he had on his front gate post, his name on it and the CFC logo, all in navy blue and white of course. I've still got an old Carlton cap of his that I wear when ever I go to the footy. I like to think a little bit of him is there with me. I'm glad he didn't get to see the depths our club sank to in recent times.
