I feel like sps is a different cat from what one expect. He seems tentative and yet he’s hard as nails. He seems conservative with his kicking and yet he can spot up dudes like no one else.

He just doesn’t fit any particular mould that comes to mind so we’re waiting for sps to become SPS. I think he’ll be the anti Yarran in-so-much-as he will slowly realise his potential without the incredible flashes that Yarran showed.

In fact I feel we’re only talking about Yarran in the same breath as sps because of heritage. Because I firmly believe from an application POV and a skills POV and a positional POV there’s no similarity at all.

Then again it’s my birthday and I’m really quite drunk so

Like Weitering I suspect they have been coached appallingly, he looked confused sometimes and second guessing himself, I suspect it was a case of players with too many instructions running through their heads.
Freeing their minds and allowing them to play on instinct should see these players bloom. Please Carlton take all those complicated game plans and shove them up your arse. It isn't rocket science.

People also forget, the 2nd can be the hardest for most kids. SPS will be a star and he will start to show form 2019 onwards. I have him as the biggest improvement this year.

I wanted a gun FA this year BS. Simple due to age demographic or games experience within our midfield. I’m not so sure we will need one as desperately at the end of 2019 as made out.
Of course it will depend on how Kennedy, Settlefield, Cuningham, SPS, Lang and Polson grow, but if they do grow and add what we expect them too, then they will be moving towards their 4 year in 2010.

Agree with you, Cripps, Murphy, Kennedy & E. Curnow leading and versatile Newman, Bugg , Lang if needed ia an adequate and solid midfield.
Revelations will come from the kids, Walsh in particular , SPS, Dow & Stocker won’t be too far behind and there’s Fisher, O’Brien, Setterfield, Cunningham and Polson.
We have a positive outlook for the midfield, just need luck with injuries, competent development, mentoring & coaching.

Yes there is often a big step up in performance in the 3rd year.
In the first year they often don't cop much attention from the opposition whilst this changes when they enter their 2nd year.
I'm expecting big things from SPS and Fish next year. This in turn will make life easier for the likes of Dow and O'Brien. Kennedy playing without an ankle injury will help as well.

Dow Walsh Cripps Fisher

We can count on these guys to tear it up week in week out.

OBrien on a wing to run all day like Walsh the other.

The engine room is truly Rolls Royce

Exciting future midfield. If Setterfield can remain fit, I'm sure he'll be right up there as well. But as for next year, I can see some steady improvement. But I doubt we'll see the younger guys tearing it up yet as AFL midfielders (although I enjoy the optimism).

I have reservations about Lang..........and Polson. Hope I'm wrong.

They are superfluous on our list.
They have a fight on their hands for a spot in the seniors in 2019.
Just my opinion.

It was encouraging that we've targeted mids/forwards with many of the picks and chosen two more to fill one or two of the last spots.

It's so important to have depth in that position.

Our mids due to youth, injury or just general fitness could not compete for more than a half in most games last year. Our defensive pressure was non-existent and there was a fair bit of "bruise free" about us.

Andrew Russell has a fair bit to work with now, I hope he can have this group presented to Bolts in round 1 in a condition that puts pressure on the coaching staff.

A bit of a nothing article, but I thought I’d stick it here-
http://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/2019-0 ... eld-update

If Kennedy & Setterfield can get some continuity in their footy, we should have good inside depth. Along with Cripps, they can push forward and give us an extra marking target too.

SPS, Dow, Walsh, Stocker, Fisher, O’Brien and maybe Cunningham should boost our midfield over time - but it’s still a very young group.

Do you see Jack getting a run in the midfield?

Not if Cripps, Kennedy and Setterfield stay fit.

Thanks
I am thinking he won't be in our best 22 with the recent additions.

He's got strong legs and good vision. If he can match Crippa's core strength plus with a little more upper body work, then there would be no reason why he shouldn't be an in and under mid. The could both rotate with Setterfield in a forward pocket with the other mids coming off the bench. It's starting to get a little exciting that we can even discuss possible options of players.

I agree with you Sidefx.

I can't leave Silvagni out of my best 22 because of what Ive seen this summer and what Ive heard from other track observers who have seen him coming of age.
