Hopefully it is true, only problem is that as far as percentages go The Australian has a strike rate in the single figures.

Austin a very tough player at 5' 11" played above his height as a key defender and one of only 3 players to keep Peter Hudson goal less in a game.

Just hope he hasnt picked up too much of an "AFL" vibe in his time at HQ. Mixing with Adrian Anderson and Jeff Gieschen on a daily basis the intellectual stimulation would be amazing.

Look, I get all the romanticism with an old Blueboy coming home, but my question regarding this appointment if true would be...when did Curly last run a footy dept at an AFL club? My guess is (without looking at the history books), would be in the late 80's with Fitzroy???

I just hope Swann and Ratts etc know what they are doing, seems to be a dangerous game they are playing this close to trade week???

Go Blues!

So there's chance we'll have two Austin's.

Hotcox's head will explode.

The point on the accuracy/success of Hotcox's information has been made.

No more please.

I get what you are saying but he has been at the AFL for many years in a fairly senior role if anything it is surely a step down from what he was doing so I can't see how if this is true cant be good for us.

Interesting that the Australian describes him as having been 'dismissed'. If true that would indicate he wasn't doing a good job or that his position with Ratts was untenable (in which case you think he would have resigned ).

What does the general manager of football operations actually do? Is he there to oversee the footy department on behalf of the board - ie 'checking up' on the footy dept? Is it an admin position - contracts and trouble shooting, wheeling and dealing at the footy depts behest - or a footy postion. Does he have a say in footy matters or is he there just to ensure the footy dept are doing their job to the satisfaction of the board? I would think it is a position that is fairly sensitive, because the coach has to be able to run the show without interference. It's hard to know whether the position needs to be occupied by someone who thinks the same way as the coach, or is there to critically assess the coach, or there to take actions at the behest of the coach - ie get this player, get this guy signed, deal with Fev etc etc.

Loved Curly as a player, possibly the only Carlton player with a worse kicking style than me. He was unlucky, missing 81 with injury and 82 after being injured at training in GF week after doing a super job in the prelim. But as others have pointed out, he hasn't been around at club level for some time and is not far from 60 which is old to be reinventing yourself in a new role. Wouldn't mind a younger, independent outsider.

First thing that comes to mind when I think of Football Manager is signing players to contracts. Not sure who had that responsibility between Icke and Swann but I'd say we've done pretty well recently, so if it was Icke there are big shoes to fill, but Austin has been at the AFL for a long time so he will be switched on and as someone said it may even be a step down for him so he'll do fine. May even have some inside word on the contracts of GC and GWS players

No thanks, thinks playing injured players and old hacks is the way to go.

You're right. Has absolutely no idea on recruitment and managing players.

True. You'd want nothing more than to be demoted and continue working in the same team.

Could Malthouse be announced as replacing Icke?
