I'd reckon they'd be analysing a player's football career before anything else. Head to head is Richard's a legend of the game? Not from what I've heard. Sure he's made a good fist of a post footy tv career, but by those standard we'd be talking about Sam Newman being elevated as well.

He may be worthy of a place in the hall of fame, but Legend?

And remarkably poor timing from Hutchison - it's a piece that should / could've come BEFORE the announcements not after.

The AFL stalled on putting Ablett in the hall of fame because of what he did after his career.

The AFL also refuse to consider what Lou Richards has done after his career.

They love contradiction don't they?

The timing by Hutchy is appalling and disrespectful.
Jezza is a popular choice. He's respected by all footy fans as a 4 time premiership player and premiership coach who was the Ablett/Franklin equivalent in the 70s.
The rules state that Legend status is reserved for players and coaches. You can't get elevated to legend status because of your media role. Otherwise Mike Sheehan would end up a Legend for sure. I like the rule. Hall of Fame is sufficient reward for a good player like Lou who then had a successful media career. He didnt serve football. He served Ch 7 and the Sun and was paid for it. Football doesn't owe him anything.

There are different criteria for HoF and Legend status. Character and work off the field is taken into account to get into the HoF, but to be elevated to Legend it's purely for their contribution to football as a player (according to Caro on FC last night).

Lou is already in the HoF based on his football and post football career.

Ah fair enough then.

What Hutchy is doing is demeaning the status of HOF. As if it isnt enough of a reward for Lou Richards. HOF is the ultimate reward. Legend status places 1 person a year into football immortality. It shouldn't detract from HOF status. Maybe they shouldn't announce the Legend at the same time.

Grand Final Day would be the best day - doesn't get anymore legendary than that buzz.

My strongest memory apart from meeting him in person at my neighbour's house was being at the game he got ironed out by Stan Magro.

There are few names that draw the child out
from the old man he's become
few names when uttered tingle the spine
cause old hands to imagine the touch of leather again.

All of us who saw him leap and prowl and tackle and run
became him in speccie practise
across suburban backyards and ovals
leaping onto the backs of a thousand Jerka Jenkins.

For me Jezza
is my childhood, my dreaming, the name
that captures the love for this club
and this game – Jesaulenko you beauty!

Before my time but yep, if I had to name 2 VFL players I wished I'd got the chance to see, it'd be him & Coleman.
