Tank is weapon of choice in basement battle - Grant Thomas
Grant Thomas wrote:

Clubs are tanking the season

Now this is a revelation. Things have changed. You no longer are castigated and admonished for finishing down the bottom of the ladder.

That's right — for orchestrating piss-poor performance! It is now called genius and a smart ploy.

I do not for a minute say that players tank games. Most of what I am talking about revolves around the club's decision-makers

Puzzling interchanges and even more baffling match-ups seem to arise during the latter half of the season. It will be interesting to see the Melbourne and Carlton match today.

With every ounce of my being I still refuse to believe any team/coach would lose on purpose.

Carl v Melb:
Houla won't be tanking because he wants to win his 150th.
Betts won't be tanking because he wants to wn his 50th.
Grigg won't be tanking because he wants to win his first and cement his place
Bower won't be tanking because he wants to cement his place.
Hartlett ditto.
Wiggo ditto.
Kennedy ditto.
Bentick ditto.
Kouts wn't be tanking because he's Kouta.
Simpson wont be tanking because he wants to win his first and maybe only game as captain.
Carazzo won't be tanking because he can't help himself racking up possies.
Setanta won't be tanking because he doesn't know how to give less than 100%
I wont keep going but I hope the message is clear. The players won't be tanking. No more wins will mean picks 1 and 2 or 3 so some of their positions will be in danger straight away for starters.

Oh and Denis wont be tanking because he is fighting for his career.
I will be sooo pleased when we win another game and this thread can be closed down.

I must have. I was probably planning a big wedding at the time and didn't take much notice from over here.
Just the same, I don't think the players will be tanking.

Blue Sombrero players never tank, unless they are part of a senior group that is in on a future plan if you know what i mean.

It's the club that implements tanking through the coach.

You can have a very winnable game that can be lost when players are apposed to players that don't suit their strengths and weaknesses.

That's tanking.

Not so sure that Pagan would do this unless he has been garaunteed his position for next year, and is in on it........

Today will tell us plenty.

Up until the freo game at round 12 i was not an advocate for us to Tank this season as we were playing some really good footy.

However it makes sense now at round 13. With only 10 games left i reckon it makes a lot of sense, especially with the priority pick available.

I also reckon that Denis Pagan has always had Carlton's best interests at heart and would tank now despite it costing him his career. Surely he knows his time at the club is already over and the club is only keeping him there coz its too expesnive to get rid of him right now.

Well we're tanking now thanks to Swan and Pagan. We would have won with Fevola.

Been folowing this thread for a while now, my thoughts are we dont need to tank, we are probably going to get your precious pp anyway. My question to you, what the flower is an extra kid going to do as far as us being more competitive goes? We are shyte and there is no 18 yo kid in the country that is going to fix it!!!!!

We would have lost more by picking Fevola and telling the young players it's OK to act like a tool.

You should be happy, Pagan is one loss closer to getting the bullet.

I think we need to continue playing our youth and we need the PP....we lack A grade talent and cant compete with the list we have....
Kruezer is a player who could give us a real lift and take some heat of some of our other young talls who need more time...
I wouldnt be unhappy to see the back of Pagan and the likes of Kruezer on the list now that we have almost bottomed out again...

Hear hear! The damage done to these kids by being demoralised each week cannot be undone by yet another 18 year old coming into the mix.

I reckon thats it in a nutshell. Adding another Murph or Gibbs isnt going to lift us off the bottom. By the way, how the flower are we still the worst team in the AFL 5 years after we started being the worst team in the AFL? To be comfortably beaten by the team 15th on the ladder when they have half their team missing is an absolute disgrace. So many changes need to be made it is difficult to know where to begin!!!!

These losses will long be forgotten in 2 years time but the 2 young guns we pick up in the draft will be remembered for 10 years to come.

Ask anyCollingwood supporter if they regret TANKING against the Kangaroos 2 years ago (when they conceded 3 goals in the last 2 minutes). That defeat is long gone yet Dale Thomas will be around for quite some time.

WAKE UP AND REALISE HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS!!!

Havent we been working the system for the last 2 years? I doubt very much whether we will get kids any better than Murph and Gibbs. You are a fool if you think that getting the pp this year will have any sort of impact, expecially if you are talking immediate impact. Our issues go way beyond that!!!
