Sticks. I absolutely felt dead inside after that kick after the siren against Essendon* in 93.

Then the pride & elation when he kicked the sealer the very week after against hawthorn.

I was a swimmer back in my teens and the state championships were on that day at the old state swim centre in Batman Avenue.

Heats in the morning, finals in the evening.

I swam really well in the morning, made 3 finals, and my dad and I went off to the footy to kill time.

In two of the events the qualifying times were good enough to medal in the final and I was feeling great.

After the game I was so flat. Went back for the finals just felt like crap. Finished 4th, 6th and 7th and in the last was beaten by a kid who had never beaten me before.

It was then I realised the power of your mental state in sport.

I stopped swimming a couple of years later and took up drinking.

I remember my friend that I always used to go to the footy with had this nickname for Tom Alvin, whenever he did something good my friend would yell out “Captain Caveman!”

Instead of taking his time in steadying, carefully lining up and then kicking, he just walked back, turned around , took a couple of steps and went bang!

This pretty much nails it for me except, i'll amend slightly:
Late 70s (from when I was somewhat aware): Jezza, Jezza, Jezza, Doull, Southby
80s: Hunter, Dominator, Bosustow & the whole mosquito fleet (special mention to Ashman... & Catoggio's hair). And Harmes (although the shine has come off a bit since he outed himself as a Tigers supporter...).
Early 90s: Diesel (just about the best Carlton player I have seen), Sticks, Braddles, SOS
Late 90s: Kouta, SOS, McKay
Beyond 2000: Judd, Crippa, Walsh, Weitering (+ C Curnow, McKay... :razz:)

Special mentions:
- Dad always used to bang on about how ground-breaking Robert Walls was, and how brilliant David McKay was.
- How the hell did we go so well in 2000 with that team???
- Frank Marchesani - for winning the Grand Final sprint after Geoff Ablett had dominated in the years when we were too busy playing in GF's...

Harmes a Tiger supporter ? Yeah, I'm not sure about that. Harmsey has never come across as a enthusiastic interviewee. I think it's possible he would say anything for effect, particularly talking to someone like Jon Ralph. eg: ''the ball was in the east melb railyards''. :lol: Although that was Sam Pang.
He has been quoted as saying ''Carlton yeah, I love the joint''. Plus I think he is active in the Spirit Of Carlton group. I reckon Jarusa would know how Harmsey's mind works. Those 2 along with a heap of SOC ex players went to WA together.

Yep, not unusual though. I recall standing under the Southern Stand at a Carlton Collingwood game. Noticed Peter German then a North player in front of me.
He was I'm told a Blues supporter as a kid. The Blues handed the Woods a good old flogging.
His celebrations throughout the game trumped mine by a fair margin. :smile:

...and has openly stated he still harbours some favouritsim for the Tigers.

Put it this way, he isn't against the Tigers. I would say he's a Tiger at heart and has received a Blue Blood transfusion.

He's the grandson of Len Smith...who coached Richmond.
He was in awe of Bartlett- but beat him in the 1982 g/f, so all is forgiven.

Harmes could support the Tallangatta 3rds for all I care. His record is Blueblood through and through.

Ang Christou was a big Collingwood supporter and had to stop himself cheering through a Daicos goal against us at Waverley in 1992.
