From what I saw against GWS, a number of our fast forays forward were initiated or enabled by a strong Acres bump or contest. I think Ollie brings a lot of strengths but I wouldn’t bring him in at the expense of Acres.

I agree, Acres was a bulldozer smashing a path from fullback to fullforward all match long, he was sensational against GWS. Ollie can't do that.

Good description.

He did bulldoze through and oppo players were bouncing off him to clear the path. Unique.

His kicking for goal is on par with Casboult. Our confidence in him with ball in hand after a mark is on par with that of Lewis Young. Lewis Young,s decision making has improved, so I believe Kemps goal kicking can be fixed. After all Casboult kicking for goal improved when he went to GCS.

That's not exactly true - Casboult's goalkicking improved a hell of a lot prior to him going to Gold Coast, he worked with Sav Rocca - and after that I never used to cringe when he was taking set shots for goals.

Was a genuine swingman - and we could have used him when Liam Jones left the club.

Having said all that - this is a genuine traditional slip up game for us - the ones where we are favourites and expected to win have proven a bridge too far too many times in the past.

Hope we are switched on this week and next week.

I’m expecting Williams in for Ison. And Weitering for Derkson although it would be good if there is a balanced way of keeping Derkson in.

Ok I'll say it.
Acres out Hollands in.
Acres runs hard, but Ollie runs harder.
And in Ollies last game he was hitting those harder targets going forwards.
I'd like to see more of that.

 I see it but I don't believe it.
I agree Ollie runs harder, but you've got to look at all the two bring to the game to make a fair summary.
To channel my inner sidex: Acres is stronger in the tackle, stringer tackler, better mark, better shepherd.
You know I love Ollie and have even said he could be a future AA wingman.
Can you find a way to bring Ollie in and retain the role Cerra and Acres are playing on their wings? Its a winning combo.
Quote:
Ison out Williams in.
Derksen out Weitering in.
Derksen had a great game and did some really nice intercepts but he looked slow, slower than Weitering.
And that is saying something.

Agree. Agree.
Quote:
Bondi, Cripps and Hewett are still slow.
Cripps put himself in a few positions in that game that could've easily gone the other way.
His slow pace and at times slow decision making nearly got the better of him several times.

If you feel so strongly about that, why don't you drop Cripps? Ditto Hewett?
You don't agree Cripps and Hewett have been in our best, since Hewett returned vs Bulldogs?
Interesting how that coincides with our winning streak.
I didn't say Cripps and Hewett were fast. Running hard from defense in 3's and 4's and taking risks is making our midfield group faster.
Its Smith and Walsh who have the speed, and in combo with HHF Hayward and Cottrell pushing up to give links.
Its about the how the whole functions, not individuals thats making us better. That's all I'm saying.

Quote:
I actually thought that game for the first time I could see him getting slower, especially as we increased our transition speed.
IMO we still need more midfield speed and yes, Walker will be a great addition but I'd still like a mature quick midfield/forward added in the off season.

To replace Cripps?
Quote:
Our problem still hasn't changed, it just hasn't looked as obvious.

Do you really believe Walker, or Humphrey (eg of your mid/ fwd) is going to push Cripps off the mantle as No 1 contested bull?
I think there's room to add Walker to the mix, and I'd love the cheery on top with a Mid/Fwd like Humphrey, but I hope its Sam Marshall. Plenty of room for them, because I suspect, Williams wont be around in 2026 (or depth), and Ison will have to make way for that new mid Fwd, if Cottrell stays healthy.

If its not broken....just add value. IMO, based on what I'm seeing in the now, Form will create Function.

3 votes Sam Walsh
2 votes Patrick Cripps
1 vote George Hewett

We won by 23 points, should have won by 60 at GWS home ground, with Umpires giving them the rub of the green. Not bad.

I agree that Acres is better in the tackle and much stronger but Ollie has seemed to have added attack and accuracy to his mix.
But no, I don't think we could squeeze him in and keep Acres and Cerra.
If they were to then it would be Ison dropped, Hayward doing Ison's role and Ollie playing Haywards role.
I wouldn't want to mess with Haywards role or drop a defender for Ollie either.
Wing or bust for me.

As for dropping Cripps or a Hewett, the question is as always, who for?
It's an area we lack depth and speed.
I agree they have been playing great football, but the game is changing still and it'll be quicker again next year as the new wave of speedy mids have a season or two under their belts.
I know you didn't say they were fast also, I was just making a point that the problem is still the same even though we are running better as a team.
Especially if we want to be a top of the ladder team, the changes still need to be made.

I think Cripps is probably not going to get pushed out (unless Rowell says he wants to come to Carlton), but he will still need more and more support around him of the new age mids.
Walker will amaze a few when he gets going, Humphrey would be a great addition, so too Darcy Wilson.

We have a lot of the pieces, a few holes but we can still upgrade on the current players.
If we had Humphrey would you play Hewett and Cripps together still?

I also like the Frank Lloyd Wright reference.

I seem to recall Casbolt was kicking pretty well in his last season at Blues too. And Earl Spalding, Park said as long as he's bring it to the ground he's doing exactly what we want from him. But in the end he was kicking goals not just behinds. I'm sure there are other examples. I'd love for Kemp, Harry and Gov to get a dedicated goal kicking specialist to help them. It worked with H once before, someone clearly told him kicking around the corner straight in front 15 m out and still missing is bullish!t and he started kicking drop punts for a lot more of his attempts and he started kicking goals again, even if not a Coleman Medal swag of goals again.

Yes re Casboult. I was one who was sad to see him delisted. We didnt bring a replacement. I feel the same about Lewis Young. If they cant find us a 200cm swingman, then keep him. He may improve.

I hope Harry and kemp learn to kick straight. Gov wont be on our list next year, and if he is will be depth....assuming Kemp learns to kick, coz his contract expires next year.

No change is great for the team.

They are happy with themselves, and will go in with the same belief and effort as last week.

Hopefully, Derksen improves another 5% ie plays well from the first bounce, and play closer to his man, and Ison kicks 3.

Weagirls are a very tall team across the board, albeit younger than us.

I think we have them covered.

Watching with interest how Pittonet goes against the inform Williams.
Both same size.

I'd prefer we included LYoung in the side. Just feel more confident with him in, if Weitz isn't but what do I know.
