Not using it as an excuse just pointing it out to Diamotism that they had 4 blokes out there that have won lots of flags.

Sorry this is off topic.

I think our recruiting has improved greatly.

Had a heap of guys who have played a heap of footy less too....

I hate excuses... its what stops you from being good.

Always having an excuse ready.....

..... often the excuse is ready before the action...........

When we get out of that mindset we will no longer be the old StKilda and we will be closer to what Carlton is about.
For as long as we keep making excuses we will be poor

Why would you replace Wayne Hughes?? If so who would replace him??

Has made some very good selections, and some that haven't come through. I'm sure his hit ratio would be as good as any other recruiting manager in the AFL. I see no reason to change.

The Rich and Yarran argument is ridiculous. I stand to be corrected but Rich had just over three possessions to three quarter time, sure he kicked a fantastic goal in the last, overall well beaten!! And his overall impact would have been less if not for some poor tap ruck work from Hampson.

The comparison between the two (Rich / Yarran) is simple. Rich is a slow midfielder with a fantastic penetrating kick. He is a matured body rookie, who is playing in a team which allows his effectiveness to be exploited when opposition teams allow him to play head to head. He is vulnerable when tagged (as others are) and then restricted in his effectiveness as he is not suited to playing either half back or half forward!!!! Would he have assisted our midfield, Yes!! But we opted for a player who will give our team three options of use. The versatility will prove very effective.

All players selected within the top ten a very good, they each will contribute in their own specific way. As long as Yarran develops physically into a stronger endurance player, his skill and versatility will make you realise why he was a better choice for the Blues, long term.

Hughes has been one of the best recruits we've had. It wasn't our kids that let us down last night, it was our leaders. We had the game in our grasp and we let it slip.
Brisbanes experienced players in Brown, Bradshaw, Black etc, they picked the team up on their shoulders and willed them to a win. Our leaders allowed us to become defensive and reactive.
we required somerone to stand up and make a difference but no one was capable.

Hughes has provided us with one of the better lists in the AFL to go forward.

Just on that it was good to hear Braddles talk about leadership groups at Carlton - obviously the club realizes we need leaders.

This I agree with. It's no surprise to me that many of our 2nd tier kids have found it harder than ones at other clubs to begin to shine, given the quality of our 'leaders' in recent times. Yes, Juddy is a perfect role-model, but look to the next group. Fev can get his teammates rolling when he's on-song, but if he's having a shocker does he really inspire confidence? Stevo, well it's all been said. Thornton and Waite are both capable of the brilliant and shocking in equal measure, and in T-bird's case can sook in very unleader-like ways with his younger contingent. Our other more experienced players like Houlihan and Wiggins are also two of our most inconsistent. And let's not forget that Lance was captain when a lot of these young guys were starting, not exactly a model-leader in his own right.

Murph, Gibbs and Kreuz have the hallmarks of being great leaders of this club for the next generation, but they've shouldered too much burden already. When our older guys have to look to blokes 6-7 years younger than them for leadership and inspiration, something ain't right. I can only imagine what these players could achive with the four Brisbane had.

Maybe it wasn't our kids but do we have enough of them in the right areas? We might get the coaching and 'developement' right and still come up short, it's all relative. It's not as if getting one thing right precludes any attention on another. "One of the better" does not necessarily equate to efficiency when put in context.

You cant rebuild a team in 3 years.
We had more deficiencies than any team in the AFL. Unfortunately, it takes time to do it properly. I'm really keen on recruiting a structured, well balanced list and I believe the club and recruiting staff have been excellent in building a balanced list.

My mail is Ratten over ruled Hughes. Hughes wanted Rich. Ratten took Yarran.

I agree that Hughes needs to go. Not because of this year, but I think recruiters need to be changed every couple of years to mix it up a bit.

Need to get some hard nuts in the team.

No offence to Yarran as I think he hopefully might be a beauty, but too pass up on Rich is unbelievable. I could not believe it at the time, and still could not believe it last night. It would have complemented out midfield beautifully. Tough nut who gets the ball, to our not so tough nuts in Murphy and Gibbs - Perfect match.

We were in no position to take any risks, and I think we have taken a big one in not getting him.

My opinion, things may be different in a few years time, but right now - geez dont know what to say.

It is very hard to get #1 picks wrong and as expected they are all good choices. What really distinguished recruiters is sorting the wheat from the chaff later on. We have done okay with this but are inferior to other teams. Adelaide have done brilliantly with their post 20 picks. We need to be the best at everything to win a flag. Maybe we need to put more resources into recruiting, or analyse why Adelaide have done so well in the last 5 years. Part of it will be luck, but they have been consistently good with post 20 draft selections so we need to emulate them and be the best at that.

What Adelaide have is a magnificent development program and a clear understanding of how they want their draft picks to play and come into the team.

You will rarely see any Adelaide youngster play footy in his first AFL season let alone play 15 games like our youngsters have had to do out of necessity. They leave them completely alone in the SANFL for a year or more and just get them to work on their deficiencies and get more comfortable with being AFL players. Then they bring them into the team one at a time surrounded by a team that knows exactly what they are doing and in turn those players also know exactly what is expected of them.

They have one of the best development programs in the country, we could do a lot worse than look to them as a role model.

Interestingly, we've tried to take the approach Adelaide take with their first year players with Yarran but.........

Hughes & StIcke will really have to earn their money this recruiting period.

In previous years it was nice to have early draft picks to use, but this year they really need to use some imagination and courage to address our current issues and potential issues on the horizon.

A massive challenge....

The debate Rich vs Yarran is ridiculous.

They are two different players.

The midfield is top three and Rich would have done nothing more than taken game time away from Murphy and Gibbs.

Yarran is a small forward and Rich isn't.

Our issue isn't in the mmidfield and therefore Rich would have been no benefit to the team last night.

We have missed Waite & Jamieson and I am concerned about Bower's inconsistency.

I am looking forward to Mitch Robinson next season and Yarran with a full pre season under his belt.

He may or may not make it but a little unfair on the kid in his first year. He certainly has all the attributes to be a star. The rest is up to him.

I am looking forward to Waite, Jamieson, Robinson and Yarran being regulars to that line up last night.

I am also hoping we will trade shrewdly and recruit a tall back.

Unfortunately good tall backs don't grow on trees and are rare to find.

I'm sure Yarren is going to be very good but I'm not 100% sure you should be using a top 10 pick on a flanker - proper midfielder of KPP we had a chance to take either and we didn't I hope we do not regret it

Yarran has great disposal by either hand or foot and excellent decision making so shouldn't that make him a top 10 player.

Build a bridge.

Where did I say Yarren had questionable disposal I was refering to grigg armfield brown hampson bentley bower they are all very suss

I referred to yarren as a flanker and we have seen what picking flankers has done to some sides
you get a top 10 pick you need to use it wisely
