I've met Jake Niall and he's a nice enough bloke but it doesn't take much insight to realise that 99% of sports journalists (Jake included) have no better an analytical perspective on the game than half the people on this site or in the footy community generally. And yet one soppy little article clogged with nostalgia and the "it was better in the old days" mob start jumping up and down again.

Funny...

You sound like a wanna be journo and jealous of their influence on the masses. People have been reading the papers for years and watching TV - build a bridge. These sort of articles will create discussion. I guarantee you it will be on Dribble MMM and AW on talkback this weekend. But I will ring up and say that GWS said we shouldn't talk about this and I am sure all discussion will stop pronto.

I will add my two cents  , Geelong did what Carlton tried to do but they did it successfully. The difference was that they had the backing of the Federal Government, State Government, AFL and local council.

I would not be surprised if we (or other teams) played home games at Kardina Park.

Cheers,
Ronnie

If Princes Park was situated in a city called Carlton and not an inner suburb of Melbourne.. and if that city needed local infrustructure to deifine itself.. im pretty sure the Federal Govt.. the State Govt and the local govt would have stepped in and given us the necessary assitance.

Whats in Geelong when Ford close down???

Victoria is not just Melbourne or Carlton...

GWS, i don`t think its wrong or stupid for supporters to have hope of one day seeing Carlton play again at PP especially now its on the AFL`s agenda to find a third ground. A sensibly fixtured game against Freo,Port or one of the new teams would be fantastic. Just ask Geelong supporters how much they enjoy going to Kardinia Park where their club gains maximum profit in front of a partisan crowd and massive home ground advantage.

But its unrealistic that an elite sporting stadium would be built for us... in the middle of the city where the local residents dont want it... that can double as our elite training facilities... that would hold 35k people in comfort.. and with the gardiner stand being untouched as its listed as heritage... at the cost of tens of thousands of dollars.... just so some people can remember the eighties...

Im really not sure where grown ups get those kind of fantasies in a world of financial meltdown where the game is now at a very lite level requiring lights and night games.. sponsorship and whatever just to bring in a dollar.

Now.. if we were to change over and be a VFL team.... it would be perfect... we can have the sausage sizzles behind the goals...and we can all jump the fence at 1/4 time and listen to Ratts address the boys...

I really cant understand how some people cant fathom how the world has just moved on.. and the logistics required for a suburban ground to facilitate a match in the current world would cost an absolute stack of cash... (even if the residents wanted it to be there for matches.. where clearly they dont)...

Youre not going to get the old saturday arvo footy games back at Princes Park in this real world ever again.....
Your players need training facilities.
Sponsors need exposure.
Corporates and supporters demand state of the art facilities...

Its cheaper for the AFL to do a deal with the state govt and plonk a state of the art football facility in the middle of the eastern or sth eastern suburbs from scratch...and establish a football hub out there...
They have full control... not the MCC.. or the Carlton Footy club...
And they take the game to the people... when surely if youve been watching what the AFL have been doing over the ast few decades youd notics thats the pattern cos they know its about exposure not about making 20k Carlton supporters happy....

Its just the reality of the real world .... nothing more.. nothing less..

And yes im pretty sure Sydney can get some bikers together to knee cap govts loval residents and the AFL to get it to PP... but bikers dont wanna bring anymore necessary attention to themselves and Sydney Blue isnt President... which really is a shame.. cos i know he is a big hitter in the big development world....
Im also prett sure if Surrey had to reach into his pockets to "grease palms" moths would fly out...

So were in abit of a situation as far as PP is concerned.. pretty sticky....not sure how it can be done..... great idea though!!!

Why not Port Melbourne?

As for the AFL's leverage, the canteen used to be the big carrot for footy clubs. Why not buy a catering company?... Too simple?

Rotten Ron Evans saw to it that the AFL's, er, I mean Spotless Catering's, stranglehold on AFL venues can't be cracked.

People on this site seem to think that all Carlton members loved PP, they don't!
Fact is that many (most) members prefer Docklands and only the real passionate and romantic supporters post on this forum (very small representation of the blues supporter base) get misty eyed at the thought of Carlton games returning to PP.

For those that long for the return of PP LET IT GO!!!!!

I for one hated the ground as did nearly everyone that lived outside of Melbourne. You couldn't get a park & public transport wasn't an option which basically meant that you HAD to plan whether you wanted to make a whole day of it or not bother going, living in the country meant that I only went to the MCG.

Since our relocation to Docklands, we have seen our membership increase, our attendences increase all the while we were playing crap. What does this tell the diehard PP fans? MOST SUPPORTERS DON'T LIKE PRINCES PARK!!!!

END OF ARGUMENT!!!

PP will always be the HOME of Carlton - where we train, keep our memorabilia, hold our family days, but when we play, we play with the Big Boys in a professional stadium where we belong

At the end of the day the points re why PP had no future are valid. It is inner city but only convenient if you live close. It is about 3 k from Docklands and about an hours travel time on the slowest tram line in history. The most attractive timeslots are night games, and no other club wants to play at PP.

Once Docklands was in the planning stages then PP was doomed and the AFL certainly weren't going to do Elliot any favours. His plans involved forcing everyone to pay to get in and then pay to sit down, which is hardly a great deal for supporters or makes the ground 'traditional. The result of his decisions sent us to the wall onfield and off field. I'm not sure how that makes him right. And the AFL were promising not to schedule games there. It is more likely that teams will fold or relocate or merge than there will be a requirement for another AFL ground.

I loved PP as a kid when it had lots of standing room and every game was on Saturday afternoon. One time Ron Barrassi came and listened in to our transistor on his way to the rooms to get a result from another ground. That was then this is now. I live in the SE and I much prefer Docklands. It is very convenient for public transport and I don't mind indoor footy in the depths of winter.

seriously this is pathetic, mainly your use of the word 'most' - on what are you basing this on? And as for saying they prefer docklands you must be on something pretty strong. Ask every single social club member which ground they prefer to watch the blues at? What? they don't represent most? The represent a fair percentage of people that regularly go to games. As for your other comments about membership increasing etc - this has happened across the board at all clubs, the fact is that most supporters that regularly go to games enjoyed princes park more, the difference is that many of us realise that there were reasons to move - I'm on the fence on that in that I think if we had to move we should have got a half decent deal.

Steve it would be 1 maybe 2 games a year (not going back permanently). I reckon you would find most members would favour at least one game there a season. Best of all worlds. Why is public transport not an option? Train to Jewell station and 10 min walk, tram up Royal pde, tram up Lygon st, & bus from Doncaster and Northcote. Parking at the ground or surrounding side streets.

Geelong plays at Geelong during the season. That is a hell of a long way from Melbourne. Other clubs supporters go to Geelong.
Carlton left Princes Park due to Collo and the AFL having an agenda.
It worked out well for Collo. Now the other clubs are not so sure.
Since when did the supporters have any say in where they have to go
to watch their team.
It may never happen, but could be a good ground for the interstate teams playing in Melbourne, and some of the lower crowd pulling games.
Im sure the extra money aspect would be very acceptable to some teams
who are getting ripped off at the MCG and Docklands.
Big Harry Madden could make it happen if he wanted to.

yeah, im around, but havent felt the need to say anything. through this entire saga that has been the stadium deals, ive only ever had one thought and it hasnt changed, from when we where forced to leave PP. the afl is run by a bunch of idiots that would not understand the concept of forward thinking. they afl and the clubs created the situatuion they currently face, but as usual, the afl sooks, and will sook until it gets its way.

its like dealing with a 5 year old who cant get the dress up costume they wanted, and yes, for me, its a massive case of, I TOLD YOU SO.

and i couldnt give a stuff what you think Synbad, i know exactly what happens and what doesnt happen when it comes to dealing with communties and large scale developments, having been involved in such things in a professional manner. most of your argument is blown out the water, from one simple scenario. there is a large residence group that oppose the grand prix, funnily enough, grand prix still goes on every year, now even at night ;)

PP was a viable, low drawing crowd stadium, back then, just as it is now (if it was a stadium). If the AFL had a remote concept of forward thinking, they would realise the sitation that where creating, but no, when you have an organisation that has a vested interested in a stridum, you are going to ge true conflicts of interest, also, running their business to personally and with too much emotion, where too hell bent on removing any sort of power carlton had, but also doing everything it can to ensure that Elliot was removed.

In the process, as someone has alluded to (i think it was bluemark) they stuffed themselves up in the process. the AFL sold a dud to everyone, and everyone bought it. (well most, i didnt buy it then and i dont buy it now) Everyone will say we where forced to move games, and maybe so, but im still yet to hear a reasonably argument as to why the AFL could not play games there. and here we are, not 5 years later, and the AFL is talking of how lovely it would be to have a third stadium.

I didnt accept it then, and i dont accept it now, "becuase the AFL doesnt want to"

well, too all the clubs complaining about losing money at TD and the MCG, and the AFL, i say to you, suffer in your jocks. you had a cheaper alternative, you had a third viable stadium, but you where all so stupid and was convinced of the DUD that AFL sold everyone that you didnt do enough due diligence to realise what you where faces with.

ANnd before you say, iwe all know it bac then, it was rumoured when we first moved that cost to break even was something along the lines of 11k at PP, 25K at MCG, 35k at TD.

This hasnt changed from all reports, you signed the deal, so shut up. the afl are morons to letting this happen, but so to are the clubs. If any of them had the balls and brains to say, hold on, we think we are better of keeping it, rather than being the juvenile little shits that couldnt get there way and wanted to go to the "promised lands" made beautiful by the AFL, none of the clubs would be faced with the issues they are now.

so to these poor clubs (and to a lesser extent carlton themselves) i say, you where idiots then, and yo continue to be idiots now.

we got shafted,
you got shafted
everyon bit the afl got shafted, and now you all want to cry poor.

I actually hope both stadiums tell the AFL to get flower. it is about time that the knob ends that work at the AFL realise, that they arent the beez knees and if they stuff up their is something to pay. The AFL needs to be complelty overhauled, becuase at the moment, they have too many idiots with too many figures in too many pies.
they only thing the AFL should be involved in is the clubs.

you simply can not have an orgainsation owning or having a vested interest in a stiadium and then allow them to control the draw. you create a situation ... that we face right now.
