it is a really difficult one.

Walker
Grigg
Joseph
Wiggins
Russell
Garlett
Johnson
Stevens (next week)

Now choose 5 to play.

Stevens
Grigg
Walker
Russell
Wiggins

Garlett did well, but we are playing AFL football here not under 12s where you get the encouragement award for trying hard. He did well. It's not about whether he did his job or not, its about who can do the job the best. Johnson did his job well, Stevens will do it better. Joseph did his job well. Grigg or Russell do it better IMO. Wiggins is the only one that you might look at leaving out for Joseph as Walker could play the Wiggins role and continue to use Joseph as a tagger.

It is certainly not easy, but you pick best available. put sentiment aside. there will be plenty of opportunity for these young blokes through the year. injuries are going to happen. That's why you want depth at the club, and that's exactly what these kids provide. Saying Grigg, Walks, and Stevo have to earn their spot is rubbish. They have earnt their spots.

That's my 2 cents

The only thing i'd say the MC may question playing Walks (with a weakened shoulder) as its going to be a more physical contest and no doubt the lions will test it out

they flashed up a stat at 3/4 time and Jospeh had already run something like 13.8 km - he was about 2-3 km ahead of every other player on the paddock

Get the feeling the kid is busting his arse and doing what he has been told to do -would be unlucky to miss - you need your taggers
Had the highest Top Speed on the field also (equal with a couple of others at 30KPH).

There was only two players who maxed out at 30 kmh Joseph was one, and Betts was the other......Very suprising that Joseph is as quick as Betts... :smoking:

Walks for Garlett, tho melvey makes a good point about Lions testing the hurt shoulder. And for the next game, Stevens for Cloke. Rotate Waite and Walks through CHF.

We have to pick the best possible team for any given match. Walker/Grigg/Stevens are obvious choices when fit and therefore must play. It's not that Garlett/Joseph etc have done anything wrong and it's nothing personal - there are simply players ahead of them at this particular time. Hopefully in time players like Garlett and Joseph will gradually cement their spots in the team and earn themselves the status of being in our best 22. But nobody in their right mind would, at this point in time, select Garlett & Joseph ahead of any two of Walker/Stevens/Grigg.

The TV station only had the GPS stats on half a dozen players.

Whoever was on the top for speed etc, was only the fastest out of those half a dozen players, not the fastest on the entire field.

Garlett will definitely be dropped even though he shows promise. I think Joseph has a better chance of staying in the line-up as he plays the important role as tagger. I think it would be harsh if we dropped Johnson because he uses the ball so I'm unsure who will be dropped for Grigg (it might just be Johnson). Isn't it great that we have selection problems? For once we have depth

IMO Garlett was not that good at all. Has the same build as my 13yo sister and ran out of puff. Just not ready yet.

Jacobs will be handy but will be squeezed out eventually.

Robinson = Gun.

Joseph very, very nice addition.

V Brisbane
In: Walker, Grigg
Out: Garlett, Jacobs (harsh, but have Kreuzer and Cloke for rucking duties)

My best side:
B: Thornton, Jamison, Carrazzo
HB: Scotland, Bower, Johnson
C: Gibbs, Stevens, Simpson
HF: Fisher, Waite, Walker
F: Betts, Fevola, Cloke
R: Kreuzer, Judd, Murphy
I: Robinson, Wiggins, Grigg, Hadley
E: Joseph, Warnock, Austin

I don't know much about anything really, but I would guess Ratten has a mandate to gve Johnson a decent run of games.

Let him play a half or two for Ants, consider him in about two weeks, replacement for any injuries or suspensions. If none then it posses a good headache, while Griggs is more versatile, amongst the possible places AJ has been very good as a tag, and JR is showing good form. Tough call to make.

Garlett certainly needs some time off in the Gym to build his light Frame, but i could be wrong in thinking that he and Betts were establishing a good combination of Great forward pressure which worked to our advantage.... Both are quick and both made the Tigers turn the ball over from their pressure....

I have not seen us exert that sort of pressure for a very long time.... maybe he should be given another week to see how it goes......

Bring Walker in for Johnson....

Give Grigg a week in the Ants, although the papers were saying he is an automatic inclusion if Fit...

That is what will happen, he is a special project player they hope will work, he will be given a string of games regardless of form (not that Thursday night was a bad game for him). He will be given every chance in his first year at the club to prove if he has what the team needs.

I don't get why all of a sudden Grigg needs to prove himself for 2 weeks in the magoos. People have short memories. Through the NAB series Grigg was killing them. If he is fit, I have no doubt that he is straight back in.

Garlett out for Walker.

Grigg for Joseph who grubbed a kick to Houlihan and mucked up a kick.

Russell's kick was perfectly weighted when he hit Garlett on the 50 after receiving Hadley's handball in the middle.

Gibbs missed with a snap.

Scotland kicked out on the full when he tried to hit Betts, but Heath's name isn't Russell, so that poor kick is overlooked.

Jacobs won't be dropped, until such time as Hampson or Warnock earn a spot ahead of him.

Cloke will not ruck outside of the forward line until such time as he is our last ruckman available on the list. Cloke is providing a great marking target around CHF, gives us plenty of prescence and physicality. CHF is the position they have developed Cloke for over the pre-season.

After watching the game last night, Garlett and Cloke out.

If Johnson has a similar game against Brisbane as the first game against Richmond then he'll be a monty to be replaced by Stevens.

Johnson had an ok game this week. Was simply given the wrong matchup ... is not our 1st (Jamo?), 2nd (T-bird?) or even 3rd (Bower?) best defender so what he was doing on Morton (close to the Tige's best forward) is anyone's guess.

Provided he doesn't get Bradshaw or Brown, I look forward to him having a good game this week. For me he is at more risk when Stevo comes back due to the type of players we've been playing down back rather than performance ... you can't have 3 defensive sweepers in Scotland, Stevo and Johnson.

Grigg must come back in, he's a gem. That 3rd, 4th and 5th best midfielder are really key to the team and the result, especially when they can be attacking like he can. Teams can tag Judd, Murph and maybe even a Stevo or Gibbs but the remaining mids (eg.Grigg) are always going to be free which makes the quality of the mid in that position critically important.
